ABSCESS HELL

Posted , 2 users are following.

After routine rooth canal treatment last Wednesday, I have had 5 days of pain and suffering. I was given 2 different antibiotics, of which neither have worked. I have taken copious amounts of ibuprofen and painkillers also. My dentists has been really good but still ended up at an emergency dental hospital on Sat night as the pain was unbearable.

I am now facing the fact that the tooth will have to be pulled tomorrow if the abscess (on the roof of my mouth) is no better. It is my eye tooth and I am gutted to have to wear a plate until I can get a bridge.

Has anyone gone through anything similar? What can I expect? Im getting married end of October, will I still have the plate then?

Oh poor you - how miserable.

I had a similar experience several years ago with exactly the same tooth as yours. Mine was actually a crown but I somehow managed to crack the root so had to have it removed. I had already had impressions taken and the one-toothed denture had been made and was put in immediately (this apparently helps to shape the gum margin). I had to let the gum settle for a couple of months before the gap could be bridged so, hopefully, you will get yours in time for your wedding.

Unfortunatlely, my bridge was badly fitting and when I changed dentists, he found one of the teeth under the bridge badly decayed so I ended up having two implants and a new crown!! If you can afford an implant rather than a bridge (about £2000!!), they really are brilliant and look completely natural and are as strong as a real tooth.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for your advice Katie.

When I went back to the dentists yesterday my abscess was still the same. I am trying a third course of antibiotics and am hoping this will work so I can save my tooth (it seems to be getting smaller).

My dentist is leaving and I will see a new dentist next Monday (4th) to assess my progress. The new dentist has only been qualified for 2 years and I would be happier with a more experienced dentist but no other dentists have space.

So, fingers crossed for Monday. If the tooth needs to come out I will have to make do with a bridge for a while - I dont have £2000 free!!!!

    Hi Sarah Jane

Hopefully your abscess will respond to the new antibiotics this time and you won't lose your tooth.

Often young dentists are actually far more up to date on procedures than an 'experienced' one that should possibly have retired years ago (I think this is the reason my bridge was ill-fitting - my original dentist should have been long gone!).

Best of luck anyway, and do let me know how you get on.

    Katie smile
