Abscess on vulva

Hi,

I'm in need of a little advice, or at least reassurance..

I noticed a sore lump on my vulva almost a week ago. It grew larger, more angry and incredibly painful over a few days. I'm living in a foreign country and yesterday travelled a few hours to see a gynaecologist at a private clinic. She didn't speak English so everything was translated via my boyfriend.

The abscess had burst on my way there but the doctor said she must rid all puss to limit chances of its return. Here's the bad part; without any anaesthetic or numbing she went onto cut and squeeze the abscess.. it was the worst imaginable pain, I felt sick, nearly passed out, was shouting at them to stop.. they were trying to hold me down. I genuinely feel traumatized by the ordeal. I understand that it was necessary to clean thoroughly but that pain- it cant be ok to carry out that procedure without any kind of anaesthetic?

She said that the infection was deep and gave me antibiotics with an injection to the upper thigh, along with 3 antibiotic tablets to take until I see her again on Thursday.

I was also charged 65€ for the ordeal.

I guess I want to know if people have had similar experiences. Theres a 3 x 2mm deep open wound and I'm so frightened it might get infected again. I'm cleaning it with the recommended fluid at every chance. Is there any more I can do? How long does this take to fully heal?

Advice appreciated!

Thanks, R

    hi rachel

i am so sorry you have had to go through this.... i have had this abscess (bartholin gland abscess) is the term the doctors use i have had this about 6 times in the space of 2/3 years. this is not the procedure that is carried out in the UK. i had mines lanced drained and then a cathetar put inside to drain any excess fluid for 3 weeks and then go back to have the cathetar removed. i have been advised that once you have one of these abscesses you are now more prone to getting them again.
