I have tried Nalmefene which I bought online but strugged with side effects and gave up. I then managed to get Naltrexone from ym GP which has limited side effects for me and it has been great.
I have a perfect person to test this against (my partner) who drinks the same if not more than me.
I still see him drinking every night when there is alchohol in the house, I managed to hide some and have it here for a whole week before touching it :D normally temptation would have been too much for me.
I see him desperate for a drink if theres none here or wanting more if what is here doesn't touch the sides, I'm happy to stop once its gone and not be begging him to go to the shop round the corner.
It's hard to describe the feelings, no buzz from it anymore and no desperate cravings even after having a few, in fact I have to try really hard to even get drunk now as I don't want to. It's a strange feeling, maybe one people are used to who have always had control over alchohol but not me!

He also comes home regularly with two bottles of wine, and I say no thanks....
Honestly I feel so sad and upset that more people can't get this drug. It makes me angry to think that there is not many side effects and I mean COME ON the drink is killing us FFS....I know what I would rather choose!
I'm doing my best to raise awareness and am thinking of doing a charity event to raise some money for C3. The word needs to be spread,.

That would be awesome Natalie! Every bit of raising awareness may help someone else.
I've been out of town this past few days on a raising awareness/charity weekend to try and do just this. It's hard, tiring work, but we are getting there.
Medically-assisted treatment isn't for everyone BUT it should be on the table for proper discussion with a physician who is knowledgeable enough about it.

Thanks Jo.
Been following you on Facebook so seen what u have been up to
The GP gave me another 3 months of Naltrexone today after telling her how well it works!
She also said they are starting to use it for eating disorders so the word is slowly spreading. I'm hoping she will prescribe it to others at my.surgery with problems.

Brilliant stuff, Natalie! See how word does spread slow but sure, as each of us continue on and get well with the treatment. It'll be so nice for you to not have to be concerned over your prescription for the coming months.
I was lucky enough to try a nasal spray version of naltrexone last weekend. It isn't something that is available here, but Claudia Christian had it made up by a compound pharmacy in the US. It's pretty incredible for sure!
A quick spray up the each nostril and I felt it immediately moving into my brain and a couple of minutes later I had a beer and was completely blocked as I should be. The blockage lasts for about 90-120 minutes.
This would be suitable for those who have reached full extinction and just perhaps want a drink with a meal, and no more.
In addition, for someone like me who will 'buddy' people through their first drink on naltrexone via skype, I will have a drink with them to help them (and their loved ones) come to understand how they need to approach this, the nasal spray is a wish come true for the fact that I am having to use tablets for just 1 drink over the course of 1 hour. The spray will be much better for me.
Did you see from Facebook that we also met up with Paul Turner? First time we have ever met face to face and that was lovely, too.
Lots of ideas for the future discussed between us all and how we can continue to bring this option more into the discussion.....

Wow the spray sounds awesome, might also be handy incase of those super last min emergencies if you cannot wait an hour for the tablet to kick in.
Mind you even if I suddenly decide to have a drink (like last night) I am still strict in waiting an hour, but that's easier for me as I tend to drink at home so there's no pressure to suddenly have a random drink like if you were thrust into an unexpected social situation. It has also made it easier to say no to those one off drinks when you suddenly end decide to grab dinner at a pub.
I saw you with Paul yes, I had spoken with him a year or so ago on the phone and he told me what great success he had with his patients on Naltrexone. I would have gone to see him if I lived closer.
I have spoken to Claudia via email recently to tell her how well the tablet is working for me, she asked if she could include my story in her new book she is working on :D
Anything to help, honestly i want to shout from the rooftops about how great this drug is, and feel so angry that this is not an option for everyone.
On a strange side note the chemist just rang me as they have to order my Naltrexone in specially, anyway he said did i ring about it a few days ago? so I said no just got the prescription today.....turns out they had a packet in stock for someone else!! so who knows maybe that word really is spreading around Kent, due to it being a green medication.
My GP has also recommending 'help' alongside the tablets, although to be honest I am not attending the Alcohol clinic, as I found it a waste of time -.- but I have had some councelling.
She has also given me some mindfulness app recommendations on my phone to try and I am looking into meditation, I know I also need to deal with the 'why' do I drink as well as getting rid of the physical addiction too.
My only worry is the GP says. well you don't want to be taking Naltrexone forever...erm yes I do! lol.

Nice to hear your story will be in the book. It's going to help a lot of people Hope you put in a good word for me too, ha ha (just kidding!).
I know of at least two others in the Kent area on naltrexone. Like you, I wish it was a green medication elsewhere too. I've only found two places in the UK that have it green.
Sounds to me that you are working through this with the seriousness it needs. So many think of it as a magic pill, when of course it is just a tool, alongside other things. The more someone understands that there might be other work to do on themselves too, the smoother their recovery on this method seems to be.

Hi Joanna
I'm an alcoholic who hasn't had a drink for 18.5 months and am seriously considering drinking. Would I be safe to drink on naltrexone?? Many thanks

Unfortunately I cannot answer that question for you. I would suggest that you contact a prescribing physician and discuss your options with them. For example, naltrexone is a prescription only pill in most countries, so you need to get access to the medication first.
