Accidentally took twice the Prednisone dose

Posted , 14 users are following.

This morning I inadvertently took 15 mg of Prednisone (three 5 mg tabs)

instead of 7 mg---one 5 mg tab and two 1 mg tabs.

Should I skip tomorrow or just continue with the 7 mg?

I would continue with the 7 mg.  I would think that skipping a day would be risking a flare up of the PMR.   A single day at 15 and dropping back down to 7 shouldn't mess anything up in my opinion.  Of course, I'm still dreaming of the day I get down to 7 !  Good for you!

      Thank you!!!

Your plan was my initial inclination unless I hear something definitively different that's what I'll do

I long for the day when I will no longer look like a bloated chipmunk.

      Good luck with your reducing.

I agree with The Raven.......just carry on as usual........dont miss your next dose........

Yes, just go back to 7mg, going to 15 for one day shouldn't make any difference and you won't feel any negative effects from the increase or drop! xx

A lot of us have doubled up. Just carry on as if it did not happen, you should have a really good day though. What is not a good idea is to forget to take them, that really is painful!

I agree with everyone else but I have to say you must have had a good day today with 15 mg as opposed to the 7mg you normally take

Yep---decent day, but I am so looking forward to 0 mg.  I've had every possible side effect!

      Thank you.

I did something similar a while back but took 35 mgs (7x5)  instead of  7 mgs (7x1)  - I know, ridiculous. In a panic rang NHS helpline just to ask what to do the following day, but after many irrelevant questions they stated it was an "accidental overdoes" and wanted to send an ambulance!. I agreed to get myself to A&E but once there was quickly 'discharged' and told to revert to my 'normal' low dose the following day and there should be no after effect phew! Isn't this site wonderful. Good luck. jane

No, as everyone has said, take your usual dose tomorrow - the antiinflammatory effect of pred lasts for 12-36 hours so for most people works with a once a day dose. Even taking double the dose one day may not last to keep the symptoms under control for the 2 days - it does for some people but not others. It isn't a good plan to do this to find out! I took pred on alternate days for a long time and it did work pretty well for me but it isn't recommended for PMR - and absolutely not for GCA.

I doubt you do have ALL the side effects of pred - there are over 82 listed ones!

It helps to cut salt in your diet to help the bloating and weight gain can be avoided fairly well/weight can be lost while still on pred by cutting carbs drastically. I was able to lose 36lbs while still on pred between 10 and 15mg. It can work.
