Hey guys

I have recently been diagnosed with achalasia the last month depsite suffering from the symptoms for around 3 years now. However I'm afraid this condition may affect may career. I've recently been accepted into my local police force and I have to undertake a medical in the next couple of months. I'm scared that may I fail this examination and have to leave my dream job. I know you guys can't give a definitive answer to whether I will fail or not, however from your knowledge of suffering from the condition, do you think I could pass the medical and fulfill the duties of an officer ?

Many thanks

I would have thought as long as you get the nutrition you need

there is no reason why you can't do the job and fulfill your duties.

As long as you are managing this with the right nutrients and are eating as healthy as you can your fitness will be the same.

I wish you the best of luck with your medical.

I believe that the criteria for fitness , running and so on should be known to you, so practise and train to meet the standard and you will be in a good position. As far as more general medical requirements are concerned, there may be a set of questions that you will need to answer to disclose any medical issues you have. If you suffer from debilitating spasms this would be more of a problem than peristalsis problems. I would feel inclined to ask your specialist for advice, and they may be able to write a letter in support of your application if they feel able to , and you can then attend the medical armed with this if the need arises. Shift work can be very tiring, and the work stressful, so you do need to go into these issues very carefully and realistically.

I think if you have your Alchalasia under control and it doesn't effect your job performance being in that type field, I think you will be fine. I don't know where you're from/live but you have your rights and people can't discriminate from you for having an illness. If they expect you to perform at a certain level and say give you an obstical course to run in a certain amount of time, and you can't do it. They probably have the right not to hire you if you fail at it. I don't think it has a thing to do with what your Dr. says, but moreover how well you perform physically.

I think this is a question that only you can answer.  If your sympotms are under control there shouldn't be an issue.  But I know that sometimes my E will spasm and shut me off mid-sentence.  At times acid wells up so intense that I can barely get the car pulled over.  You will need to ask yourself if your symptoms would ever put you, your partner or the public at risk.  If you would be momentarily incapacitated at times, then that is a serious thing to consider before entering into the law enforcement field.
