Achilles pain

Hi. I ruptured my Achilles back in January. I am still in constant pain and limping badly. I didnt have surgery, was just conservatively cast for 14 weeks, and then physio. All the posts i have seen are from people who appear to be back to fitness and pain free... anybody else having problems? Apparently i am in the 'less that 1% ' that has trouble in recovery. Its driving me mad. Constant tendon pain, cramps, and the feeling of pins going into my heel on a regular basis. Soooo miserable with it.

I didn't rupture my Achilles. I have tendinitis and still painful and swollen after 6 months. To cap it all have sprained same ankle. Just told to ice and rest when I can. Have taken anti inflammatory and pain relief regularly as instructed but am no different.

    Fiona,

I had ATR last September conservative management and still not right. I'm having another MRI scan next week on foot and ankle. I followed all doc and physio instructions to the letter but I had a few setbacks. Tendonosis was diagnosed and then on the metatarsals a near stress fracture. I've been referred to a bone specialist to rule out any other underlying bone condition. It's incredibly frustrating I'm swimming now but cannot do anything strenuous and walking or standing for long periods cause a pain in a number of areas of my foot. I cannot wear flat shoes most comfortable in a slight wedge shoe or fit flops. Have you been back to your consultant? I've stopped physio for the moment until I get new MRI and am doing exercises I can manage myself at home as tbh it was costing me a fortune and I had no major success from it apart from stretching the tendon out. Will let you know what MRI shows up.

      Hi.

Thanks for your reply. I know it sounds horrible, but nice to hear from someone else having problems. I snapped mine in Jan, afetr standing on tiptoes! Got straight into my physio straight after cast, and they said i was well ahead with what i was managing. I was in absolute agony when it first snapped , and most days still now in considerable pain. I can cycle for miles, but just cannot walk. Its driving me crazy. I miss walking, and often have lower back ache from hobbling. Some days not bad, other days look like i have been kneecapped! Have had an xray a couple of weeks back to rule out any calcification. Consultant said the tendon is still very swollen and thick at repair sight. Have started up physio again. Its just sooo frustrating, after such a stupid accident.

i'm no doctor but you might want to consider surgery then. if it hasnt healed without it. a guy i know did the same thing and ended up having surgery. im 3 weeks post op. no pain, bit of swelling with this cast but in a walking boot in a week. still nwb though

Well I am almost 8 weeks post op for a ruptured achilles tendon at the heel bone. I was in a splint for 5 weeks because I told the doctor I didn't want a cast. I am now walking with a boot and 2 wedges with one crutch but its still weak and does swell in the boot. I am moving forward and hope to be finished with this boot all together in the next month. Its a long recovery but not as bad as some have had it. I couldn't imagine being in a cast for 8 weeks or more, I guess it depends on your Doctor.
