Achilles rupture. When does Physio begin

Posted , 4 users are following.

Complete rupture of Achilles March 1st 2018. Cast for 2 weeks, just got my air cast boot with wedges. Non surgical. When does the physio start ? I was given a sheet of paper saying heel tapping this week but it doesn't say how often. To do this I take the boot off right ? I'm going to contact a sports physiotherapist tomorrow . I don't want to fall behind and won't want to do too much either.

    Hi Nashwaak .

Have a look at Evan Brown on utube . It worked for me . I was walking full weight in boot at 4 weeks , out of boot at eight weeks and back at work bricklaying at 10 weeks .

Yes Mark they put me on a trial that 22 hospitals are doing . It comes from America , Australia and Canada . Basically straight on a air boot with wedges . Early weight baring after 2 weeks , no crutches fill weight baring at 4 weeks all in the boot . Also do exercise out of the boot . Like wiggle toes back and forth , move foot left to right and try a clinch you calf to see if it has connected . No streching of tendon . What they want is for the tendon to get used to weight for when you walk on it at eight weeks aslo to trenthon the mussles around the foot and ancle . Worked for me so happy .

Im 21 weeks post rupture which had a 12 mm gap . Back at the gym but not doing anything to serious for at least 9 months .Not limping and very little scar tissue .

Wow! I'm super surprised they aren't doing surgery! I ruptured both of mine completely. I had surgery on both 5 weeks apart. I wonder how well it heels when they don't do surgery? I suppose there is a lot of scar tissue and a slower recovery time. Good luck I would think physical therapy should be soon.

There isn't much time between both procedures.

There is no risk of infection with non surgery.

    Hi Nashwaak.

It seems that everyone gets different procedures and it's usually down to your doctors way of doing things.

I had a full rupture beginning of last year, went non surgical, was in a plaster for 7 weeks, then in a boot.

I started physio about 3 weeks after plaster.

You will need to be patient and don't try to rush things. Take care.
