achilles tendon nonsurgical cast postions

Posted , 7 users are following.

I ruptured my achilles tendon playing basketball. I went to a foot and ankle specialist and he put my foot in a cast. The foot was angled down about 15degrees. After 2 weeks removed that cast and put another one on repostioning my foot at about 90 degrees. Did that cast for 2 weeks. Removed that and just got my 3rd cast. He pushed the foot all the way back as much as possible, maybe 20-30degrees and put a cast on. I feel a lot of pressure and its uncomfortable. I lost sleep last night and did a ton of research and cant find anything on the cast positions during achilles tendon nonsurgical treatment. Im a little worried that its being stretched too far back with this last cast. If anyone has had nonsurgical treatment plz tell me how the cast angles were applied especially the last cast. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Been a few days since last spoke so how's it feeling now you have the boot on ?

The boot is awesome! Love it. At night i take it off and move my foot around and try to stretch it out just a little bit. The last 2 days ive been walking around the house without the boot. Not much tho, just a little bit. I dont have much strength in it at all. I'll put the boot back on if i go out. All in all i think its healing really good!

I was worried about cutting the cast off but with the way things are going I believe 100% I made the right decision.

Very good to hear, it's amazing how much further you progress in the boot as you have more freedom to get foot moving.

      Have a great day

Hi. I'm just over 3 weeks into my full tendon rupture. I was given the boot after the first week or wearing a cast and my quality of life is so much better. I have 3 'wedges' in my boot that sit under my heel making my foot point down. In a week (this will make it a total of 3 weeks in the boot) I have been told to remove one of these wedges and to remove the other 2 at 2 week intervals. I began to weight bare 2 days ago. I would advice anybody to who this injury or get a boot asap. In fact, my surgeon has said that they don't use casts anymore (NHS here in the UK). I have one question though- does anybody know if taking a bath is good or bad for this injury?

Im just over a month into my injury and i took a bath right after i cut my cast off (last week) and soaked my foot. It felt very good and afterwards everything felt a little looser. I dont think it'll hurt to soak ur foot but i had a partial rupture so idk if having a full rupture u should soak it or not.

I may just have a go and report my findings on here for anybody else who's wondering smile

I think the heat helps the blood flow. My foot was a little cold and im sure the blood circulation isnt very good after that injury. When i soaked mine afterwards i could flex it a little more then before. So i honestly dont think it'll hurt at all.

Yeah that's the exact issue I'm having so that's why I though a nice warm bath would help with blood flow

You're about the same stage as me, as of today, I'm exactly 4 weeks since I ruptured my achilles (Partially). I was in a back slab for 10 days and then a boot for 6 more weeks, with 5 wedges, after 2 week, take out 1 and then 1 each week. Leaving me with none by the end of the 6 weeks. Another thing the doctor asked me to do as soon as I was given the boot is PWB and FWB after two weeks when the 1st wedge comes out. I should be on FWB now, but I'm taking my time, I think I can handle it but I'm being precautoius.

As for taking a bathing with teh boot off. I haven't done it myself, as I want to stick to what the doctor has told me. But if you look at the Protocols at these private clinics (I'm treated by the NHS), by week 4, they say taking the book off and doing ROM exercises is ok, and also bathing or showering (with a chair) is ok as long as you don't stand on it.
