Achillies

Hi all. I injured myself whilst playing football 3 weeks ago. I stretched for the ball whilst in the air and as I landed awkwardly, I felt and heard something crack about halfway up my shin. My ankle swelled significantly and bruised, it has returned to a normal size again but I still feel pained if i stretch or am in an unnatural position. Personally I think I have injured my achillies but am unsure....Any thoughts? Thanks

My self diagnosis was a frightening inability to get up on my toe on the injured foot.. just nothing there to pull me up. If its still painful thats what doctors are for.

Impossible to know but easy to find out. There is a simple test somebody (friend) could do which involves kneeling with foot over edge of bed/chair etc, and pinch calf muscle in certain place (YouTube). If your foot doesn't move it's torn/ruptured. Ultra sound scan confirms degree of damage. You need to sort - it won't heal itself I'm afraid. It might just be a few mm tear but without treatment the whole thing is likely to go.

Yup - that's the one I had in mind. How are you getting on Tim?

Tendon seems fine, but still recovering calf muscle strength and general fitness.. terrifying how long it takes to get back up to speed again. Also got a big toe bending issue which the podiatrist diagnosed which wasnt helping the gait recovery, but its all slowly getting there

I replied but not sure pressed send. Glad you moving forward. We generally advise patients 6 weeks for every 1 week of muscle non use. My limp is awful. It was minimal initially but it seems my knee on non ruptured side is badly damaged from having extra weight on it for so long. Very worrying as struggling to walk. Seeing physio again on Monday.

Wow 6 week recovery for 1 week of non use!! Put that way it sounds horrific, but its about what I've been told but dont want to believe!!! Yes, the bad gait probably caused me some problems too.. hip and lower back are complaining, but I'm still trying to reduce weight as well to help there... almost down to "overweight"!

Errr yes.... Trying to reduce a little bit of mass here too! I know, the 6:1 ratio is horrific. I keep reading on here to see if it's totally wrong but it seems to add up. I guess it's one of the reasons it is classed as being such a bloody awful injury.

Hi there, you say you felt a crack on your shin? Most achilles tear you will feel the crack on the calf not the shin! Thompson test will verify but as it's been 3 weeks you need to get it checked out it you will do further damage! Good luck

As well as the Thompson test your ability to walk properly will be an indication too as said before you are unable to go up on your toes , I had a really flat footed walk as couldn't bend my foot at the toes , I knew I had done my tendon as everything was text book symptoms , as also mentioned before it would be the calf not shin that would crack , mine felt like someone had kicked me in the calf , prob best get to GP or A & E if your symptoms similar

I think it depends where the rupture is. Mine was right at the bottom of the tendon so I felt and heard the crack in my ankle. Calf was fine.

Nobby, go to hospital if your worried or yet see your GP. This sound abit to much for people to answer on this forum with no medical experiance. I hope it goes well.

How do you know we don't have medical experience? People come onto forums to get ideas and share experiences. It works well although obviously not everyone likes them.
