Aching arm after shoulder surgery 4 months on

Posted , 59 users are following.

I had rotator cuff and torn tendon repair 4 months ago. I still get an aching arm most days and have become very clicky, more so than before the opp.  I appreciate there is pain for many months after this operation, but I don't see any sign of easing, if anything, some days are getting worse. Obviously, there would be pain if something has gone wrong, so how am I supposed be be sure it is all fine? Has anyone else had these sort of experiences at this stage?

I had the same symptoms early on like you do.  I am ahead of you in my recovery, when I see any real improvements, I will let you know!

Well, I'm beginning my 7th month following rotator cuff surgery and I still worry about tearing something.  I have 4, maybe 5 anchors.  I did a little bit of golf after my 4th month.  When it hurt, I discontinued.  At 5 1/2 months I was able to put my hands on a bicycle handle without hurting my shoulder.  Fast forward to today at 6 months - I still hurt!  I can't sleep very long on that side.  I get pain in my neck and jaw and take ibuprofen twice a day.  I started a strength training program last week, hoping to gain some strength, not only in my arm, but also in my body from so many months of inactivity.  (I gained 30+ pounds from my injury to present), so one of my goals is to lose some weight.  I find that I can do some exercises I never thought I would be able to do again.  My shoulder aches today, so might have overdone it.  One issue that concerns me is that if I'm sitting on the floor, it hurts terribley to use my arm to get back up again.  At 4 months, my doctor said I could expect to see improvement over the next 18 months.

      Hi Katherine,

Its pretty major stuff that you have had done and you have a way to go. It is a long journey ahead, but things can only get better.  I finally am able to put my hair in a pony tail again after 7 months!  I hope your sleeping improves soon, all the best x

Thank you for replying. I also haven't been in physio as they thought I would have to have surgery again. Their was severe nerve damage and I have had to do something called desantization. It skin is improving and I start pyhsio this week. Maybe this is why im so stiff and still have. so much pain. Im still not back to work and its quite depressing. I do hope things for you are well and I can't wait to get to where you are. I almost feel like having another MRI as I feel something is wrong. It hurts so much even when breathing. I use a back support which does help but this is so frustrating. Again thank you for replying to me.

Sorry for your pain.  People often ask me if Im better now, but it is just the start of the recovery!  I have been so anxious something was wrong, the surgeon gave me a scan at the six month mark. It has proved everything seems to be healing as it should.  This information has helped me a lot, so able to put it to the back of my mind some of the time, although it does hurt more then usual some days, often in my shoulder blade at its worse.  Keep working with your physio, that and time will get you there, its not forever

Hi all, thought I'd chime in here after reading all these posts. I had rotator cuff repair and bicep tendon cutting done Oct after having severe pain and unable to move my shoulder for several months. The surgery went well and I never had the severe pain I expected. I immediately started PT 5 days a week and regained full range of motion in a short while. I'm still having pain in my bicep and shoulder even when stationary and not moving it. I can lift maybe 7 lbs with my left arm now. I guess I sound pretty good compared to most people on here. But, when will the pain stop? I went to my surgeon last monday and he gave me a shot and I felt great for a few hours and he said I was pushing to hard and stop PT . I had been doing exercises I learned in PT a couple times a day trying to recover sooner. My rotator cuff was torn in 2 places but did not required reattachment just debriment. Anyone out there with something similar? When can I expect full recovery?

I ice it when needed and quit the pain meds several weeks ago and Ibupropfen does nothing. Thanks for listening to my rant. Alan

      Hi Alan,

Sounds like you had similar surgery to myself. I had surgery about 9 months ago now and I am still waiting for the pain to stop sad  Just got to be patient.  Its not every day, which is what helps to keep me positive,  I hope you can be too.

So in a fit of insomnia I've been reading forums to see if anyone else has been having my same problem. I so far have found many others with the same post operative symptoms but nowhere near my same operation. At this point I don't know where to go from here on pain relief. I have tried ice, cryotherapy, heat, tens unit, yoga, nerve glide exercises but I'm out of ideas and I'm in agony. I'm 15 weeks post op a Latarjet surgery and my surgeon abandoned me at 9 weeks when I was diagnosed with brachial plexopathy in result of the surgery. I'm 25 years old and I'm a career critical care paramedic. I had 2 previous shoulder surgeries done by scope because of frequent dislocations. I had bone anchors placed and various tears fixed. After the last repair failed my last option was an open repair. They cut through my pectoralis and completely exposed my shoulder. They took a bone graft and screwed it into my glenoid with 3in screws. Then cut my bicep tendon and labrum and relocated them. He promised to have me back working as a paramedic, which is very strenuous, in 12 weeks. But he mangled my arm. It's permanently bent from shortening the bicep tendon. I have brachial plexus damage and neuropathy in my hand so bad I can't use it. Finally, vascularture impingement, median and ulnar nerve entrapment. He canceled all my therapy and refused to see me 9 weeks post op. Luckily I continued therapy on my own but I'm at almost 4 months post op and I feel like my pain is worse than the first month. But I'm seeing a lot of others having the same problem after rotator cuff surgery. I just haven't found anyone who has had my surgery to tell me when it gets better. I lost my career. No doctor will touch me because they don't know what to do. This week alone I've been told I need a neurosurgeon and that I need long term pain management. Even though I haven't had pain medication in 3 months. Any advice is appreciated and I hope all of you start feeling better soon!

Emily, sorry for your pain. After reading your story I feel I nothing to complain about. My dr told me to stop with the PT and not reach above my head for a while cause I was pushing to hard to get back in shape. In the week since I have had much less pain and only had to ice down once. He said for me its just going to take time (up to a year) to get everything back I'm going to. Luckily my employer will keep me from doing any lifting for a while yet. I wish could give some useful advice for you but I'm at a loss. Its sounds like you might need long term pain management and get plenty of sleep so your body will heal quicker. My doctor has me on lunesta and it helps a bunch. I couldn't use it while on percocet for pain so little fruitful sleep during that time. Get some sleep help, attack this thing from different angles. I feel you'll find something that will help..good luck, Alan

Emily, Our stories parallel in very many ways, besides, I am 4 months post op from the latarjet procedure. I would love to know if after all this time, if you are any better. I am now setup to see a Hand and upper arm specialists because of my nerve issue's and radial nerve entrapment after my open Latarjet procedure.

So about 2 months after this post I went to the Steadman Clinic in Vail Colorado and had a reverse shoulder replacement. Best decision ever made and at the best Ortho Clinic in the country! Highly recommend them they saved my life to say the least.
