Aching muscles and joints! Help!!

Hi everyone,

I have been on fluoxetine for around 5 months to cope with anxiety and depression. It was a struggle when I first took them but after some time I adjusted to them with very few side effects which most of them disappeared over time. However the one side effect which really bothers me is constant aching muscles and joints in my arms and legs. They cause me real problems at times, I have learnt to cope with them but it is a struggle. I am glad to say that my doctor has agreed that it is time for me to come off fluoxetine and I am currently taking one 20mg tablet every 4 days and should be off them within a month. Has anyone experienced aching limbs before whilst on fluoxetine and how did they go about coping with it? Also can I expect the aching muscles to stop once I am off the medication completely. Anxiety and depression has gone for me now thank fully but could really do with waking up and not feeling like I’m 85, I am only a 25 year old male.

Any advice or stories from others going through or have gone through aching joints and muscles would be appreciated J

Thank you.

Oh yes, i got very sick on that horrid Fluoxetine. I felt like I had the flu all the time. Took it at 10mg for 6 wks. Horrible. Worse crying, worse worse anxiety, upper rt liver pain, joint pain, muscle pain, upper backnear liver an pancreas. Liver enzymes up. So it was toxic to me. I stopped after I told Dr about it. Took 2 months to get over it. You may want to look into a diff med. Im now on #6 med Wellbutrin.

Thanks for your reply, hopefully once I am off Fluoxetine completely I shouldn't need to be on anything else as the problems which i faced prior to my depression have all but gone. Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience, my first two weeks was bad but thankfully things got a lot better. So would you say your joint and muscle pain went after a bit of time? I'm just looking for abit of reasurance that it will go with time and a bit of patience.

Yes. Completely gone! After a month, an rest of symptoms gone after another month. I have fibromyalgia an my joints an muscles have NEVER hurt like that! It was like toxicity. It might be good to have bloodwork done an check your Vit D, b-12, an magnesium and potassium an thyroid. Just advice . I just had a TON of bloodwork done an my b-12 is sky high. Normal high is 945 an mine was higher than 2,000! No idea why. You pee out b-12 what you dont need. But I was taking supplements of 500mg B-12, B-6 an biotin (its a b vit to!) Plus a redbull (full of b-12 & b-6)& VitaminWater (full of b-12 & b-6 also) so stopped all supplements except magnesium an CoQ10 an Vit E. Sometimes supplements can hurt you not help. High b-12 like that can cause neurological symptoms. Guess what.. have eye twitch for last 3 months. Driving me nuts. An on one foot, sometimes feel I stepped on water!?? Wierd. But Im on day 3 of Wellbutrin XL 150mg. I have dx depression an General Anxiety disorder. An PAWS which is prolonged withdrawls fr an opiate. I took Tramadol for yrs for fibromyalgia an bad back. Got up to high levels by 2014. Had to go to detox facility for 5 days. But Tramadol has Anti-depressant qualities. Increases norepinephrine an serotonin along with pain. I didnt realize I was also using for depression and anxiety. So have tried 5 Anti-depressants since 2014. Lexapro (sleepy all time an gained wt. Not much help mentally) Zoloft-generic ( toxicity like Prozac but did give me energy an helped mentally) Cymbalta (gave me high blood pressure an not much mentally) then tried it again just last 3 wks. An no go so Wellbutrin was called. Apparently I dont do good on Seratonin based meds. Goodluck.

Thank you for your reassurance, hopefully the pains will go for me over time, I'm booked in with my GP next week for a review so I shall ask about any tests I can do. The only way I can describe the pain is as a constant burning pain in my limbs which doesn't improve with rest or sleep. I'm hoping life shall return to normal sooner rather than later. I hope you start to feel better and the Wellbutrin does you good. Good luck to you too.
