Acid Reflux and Inflammed Esophagus?

Hello, I started experiencing esophagus problems all of a sudden about two months ago. It started one evening right after I finished supper, I felt like I had a lump of food stuck in my esophagus, rignt between my breast. It did not hurt, just felt like a lump of food just sitting there. I drank a lot of water and walked around the yard trying to get the food (?) to go down. After about an hour, it seemed to be ok. This continued to happen to me every evening after eating, but the symptom started lasting longer. At that time it was just my evening meals, then as the weeks moved forward it started happening with all meals, just worse in the evening. I made an appointment with my Gastroenterologist, who I use to see ten years ago for acid reflux. He scheduled an endoscopy, and the results showed no stricture, and no cancer. He said my esophagus was a little red and inflamed and prescribed me rabeprazole sodium at 40 mg daily. This seemed to make the stuck food feeling go away but caused me really horrible insomnia and constipation, so I had to stop taking it. I now take Nexium at 20 mg twice a day, but it is not helping at all. I am having a hard time believing this symptom has anything to do with acid reflux, as I have not had any acid reflux symptoms, or issues in years. There are no symptoms at all, no heart burn, nothing. Does anyone else have symptoms like this? Could it be anything else? Thanks.

    Hi There,

I have been having the same thing happening. It seems that it happens every time I eat now and it is painful.

I am 55 and have breathing problems as well so ,for me not only I can't breathe , but getting chocked too .it last for an hour to 2 houts. Usually a small piece of the food comes up, like a piece of maccaronni when I had kraft dinner or a piece of potatoe. Then a foamy substance seems to come up after getting a couple pieces out. I also have morgellons lung slime and thought the mucus was stopping my food to go down

    Thsnks

hello.. Go to the doctor if you're having shortness of breath just to rule out heart, and anemia, but if it's happening after you eat it's most likely gastro.  You most likely have LPR (Silent reflux), definitely get it checked out at with a gastro.  LPR is when the  LES valve down there is not holding stomach contents in properly, and with LPR it goes all the way up to voicebox.  If your esophagis has been slightly inflamed, it's to my understanding this can cause shortness of breath as the esophagis sends shortness of breath signals to the brain (also known as esophagitis).  The shortness of breath finally went away for me after a strict diet, and a PPi (Prilosec) twice a day.

Hi, ive been suffering with acid reflux for over a year and last month I did the barium swallow test and was diagnosed with a mild hiatal hernia.

I am taking nexium 20mg twice daily, and I don't have a lot of acid reflux except some sour taste. Though I am feeling like something is stuck in my throat and I am also Nauseous ALL THE TIME, which is really frustrating.

Is anyone having the same symptoms? I cant control my nausea which is changing my life.

i have the same problem of swallowing difficulties with some thing struck in the throat i went to ent they said nothing and i went gastro and i did endoscopy and found that heital hernia and prescribed pppi and now it is ok little bit and i prefer to go for laprocopic surgery to close this issue and i will do the surgery may be after one month and pls try to control ur food and order wedge pillow and try to sleep on left hand side which will prevent acid to reach throat while sleeping and i think after numerous studies silent acid reflux during night when u r sleeping cause the throat damage which results in swallowing problems and nausea and also try to eat food properly in time and 3 hrs before sleep which will help you to relief fro. this disaster

Hi thanks for sharing your information. I eat three hours before bed time and also sleep on my left side though I will raise my bed as soon as possible.

I also eat very healthy and nothing which may trigger reflux, i cut down chocolate, eating gluten free food, and doing alot of juicing with fruit. i also eliminated coffee and tea, alcohol and beverages ( the only beverage i drink is sprite since sometimes i find some relief when drinking it).

my doctor told me not to consider surgery for now since it is very small.

This sounds very similar to my current situation.  I have had acid reflux in the past, but not currently.  Now, I have this awful feeling that something feels stuck in my lower throat and chest.  No pain, just that stuck feeling.  No matter what I eat or drink, it still feels the same.  I also have occassionally felt what feels like a flutter in that spot.  No pain just a flutter.  Not sure what I am dealing with, but not fun.  I have also been experiencing a major allergic reaction to some unknown substance.  I have broken out in hives and itching from head and nearly to toe.  I finally removed artificial sweeteners from my diet and it's helping some.  I am not sure if these two things are related or not, but they are occurring at the same time.  Strange.

I have yhe exact symptoms that you have. I went to the doctor they said it was esophagus swollen. Gave me a round of antibiotics and generic nexium. I felt great for a week or so then back to crap. I started feeling this symptom from food poison. I had an omelette with onions, bell pepper, mushrooms. They say it could have been bacteria. I took nexium for weeks but it didnt work. Now i just love with it. Its not painful just discomfort. I also took probiotics it worked for a while. Then i started eating yogurg between every meal that helped for while then it stopped. Im tired and just want to go back to feeling normal

Hello. I started feeling like something is stuck in my esophagus 2-3 days ago. Before that was a small cough for about 1-2 mounts. Now the cough is gone and this horrible feeling of chunk in my chest is here. I can feel it all the time and also while I have meals it is like a small obstruction I think. I am going to see some specialist and schedule an endoscopy because I am scared of cancer possibility. I also had no real heartburn. Just really scared now...

Not an endoscopy, what you need a gastroscopy. An endoscopy is the one from your other end. From my experience, the lump in throat feeling, which is called Globus, is a symptom of a variety of conditions. Increased belly fat can cause Globus. The cough may not have anything to do with it. Eagle syndrome can cause Globus. Inflamation of the stomach wall, which is called Gastritis, can also cause the Globus feeling. Such inflamation is commonly caused by aspirin, pencilin, and dugs like Amoxiklav, or perhaps Helicobacter pylori or other bacterial infection. Alcohol and acidic food can cause Gastritis. It maybe other stomach or esophagial condition, worst case scenario can be Barret syndrome or cancer.

Yes, I was thinking gastroscopy, thanks. Anyways the limp feeling is mainly just above the stomach (behind the breastbone). And on one occasion when I was lying down I intake as much air as possible and this kinda squeezed the place and felt a sharp pain right at the spot where I feel the limp.

Doesn't sound like cancer, cancer doesn't usually cause pain. Right above the stomach behind your left breast bone is where the esophagus meets the stomach, Barret syndrome mostly occurs there. Also in that area it's common for air or liquids to get trapped and cause pain, espcially when laying down. Anyway get a gastroscopy to make sure, there can be many causes, it may turnout to be nothing afterall.

I am getting one asap. I really hope it is nothing but the problem is that all of this symptoms are quite similar so space is left for one to worry and fear the worse. Thanks a lot for getting back, feels better since I am worried sick.

I got a gastroscopy today and the doc said it was nothing. Some minor gastritis but that's about it. He also said I have been making my own symptoms by worrying too much and being nervous so I caused mild spasm.

Anyway, it was hell just thinking that it can be something as bad as cancer. My heart goes to all those people...

I am glad to hear. Oat meals and porrage will help the gastritis heal.

Good info. Your comment about medication might be the ticket. I am at the end of an antibiotic regimen for an abscessed tooth, and that is the ONLY change in my life at all, so maybe that. Never had anything like this in the past and I rarely have even a cold, so very healthy. Maybe when the antibiiotic is done, one more day, I will see a change.
