Acid reflux has burned my throat

I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia many years ago, and have suffered from acid reflux for a long time. It's generally controlled with esomeprazole (20mg, sometimes 40mg) but for years I was on other medication that caused breakthrough heartburn and reflux. I have been down to 20mg esomeprazole for a while, and the other night I had the worst reflux I've ever experienced- it was like Mt Etna exploding inside me. I had intense pain in my chest and fire in my throat. I saw my GP, who said to increase the esomeprazole and take Gaviscon if necessary, and he'd see me again in 4 weeks. I felt pretty sick for a few days and could barely eat. I'm feeling better now - but it's 5 days later, and my throat still feels completely scalded. Should I be worried? I've never had such bad reflux, and am scared that some permanent damage has been done. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I'm struggling with a huge 4 month bout of acid reflux - feel like it's ruining my life!
The acid burn in the back of my throat is sore and the upper back pain from the acid is really sore! It's there all the time - I can still eat but it's just the acid pouring into my throat ! Feels like it's there all the time and it's really bad at night I wake up with sweats! (Even sleeping elevated)
I'm on a high dose of PPI which they say takes time to work (I've been experimenting with different ones on and off now)
I do worry about long term damage to esophogas tissue from the acid - my GP says it take YEARS of acid reflux to do permanent damage, (not just the 4 months which I've had) so that's reassuring ..
I still worry though !! Seriously just want my normal life back so I can enjoy the outrageous ONE coffee and day and a few wines on a weekend!! :-(( hardly a massive abuser it's depressing .. I've just started using homeopathy now which in hoping will help too

That sounds awful, Kate! I HAVE had years and years of reflux, but it hasn't been continuous as you describe it. I'm now on max dose PPIs as well, hoping they will calm things down a bit. I know that feeling of life being taken over by this misery, and just wanting to eat and drink like a normal person. I'd be really interested to know how you get on with homeopathy- can you let us know on this forum? Thanks - and good luck!

I was on max doses of Ezomeprazole and Ranitidine as well as the prescription only thick Gaviscon. Nothing worked.
I had a Nissen Fundoplication with the Hernia repair on 15th March 2017 and I feel great! No acid at all, what a relief.
Yes you have to be on a carefully monitired diet, but even that did not bother me, as I can swallow easlily and can eat small pieces of solid foods with no problems.
My advice is - get the scopes done, from both sides , so that you rule out anything else. Then get your Hernia sorted and the Nissen Fundoplication.
Good luck!

Wow - that's a quick recovery ! It's good to know a success story from the operation ..
I feel like I might have to have to same as nothing seems to be working for me despite higher dose of everything - and I just feel a continues spill of acid up in my back and mouth it's awful ..
Can you go back to a normal diet after the operation recovery then?? Can you drink and eat normal things ?? I'd be really interested to know! Hoping I can have a reasonably normal lifestyle after this!!
Also - if you had BAD acid reflux like me, did that do any permanent damage to your esophogas??

After the procedure you are on liquids ONLY for the first 24 hrs at least. Most diets are liquids only for a week. Once you can swallow with ease you can have sloppy or pureed foods. You can only eat little bits at a time anyhow. I found a protein shake that went a long way to providing all the protein and calories needed.....SLO Drink. I have searched the net and the diet suggestions vary enormously. It depends from person to person I guess and how quickly your body heals. I think it is also largely dependent on your mental approach to the surgery. If you are positive about it, you will expect to feel better after.
Anyhow, I was drinking squash and hot black tea the next day and I found scrambled eggs did it for me. After 10 days I had my first "normal" meal, but I had to cut it into small pieces and chew carefully.
I could drive after only 6 days too.
The damage to the oesophagus and vocal chords will heal. I found a difference after 2 days and my wife remarked that my voice was not as raspy. The mucous and feeling of constant post nasal drip has gone and there is NO ACID!!
All the best.

I have been experiencing this trouble with my throat as well and have started using the Reza Band which has helped me a lot along with dietary changes. I've also been taking 40 mg of Nexium a day each morning.
