Acid Reflux Help!

Posted , 1 user is following.

I had a big bleed end of June 2015.  After that bleed my life has been quite the trail.  It was more on the horrific side.  Unbelievable depression, my skin was so HOT, no sleep, headaches and fatigue.  The worst of all of this has been the Acid Reflux that sent me to the ER.  I'm still dealing with it but I've had lots of test done and I'm on delixant an acid reducer.  I take it twice a day.  My symptons have settle though I'm on HRT and Prozac.  This has all helped.  I wanted the Acid Reflux to go!!  Any idea how long this will take before I get some relief?

Jackie? what exactly do you mean when you say you had a 'big bleed'? I've had GERD for at least 10 years and have never experienced any type of bleeding from my esophagus. That's scary. From what I've read, the 'delixant' you're taking for GERD is a delayed reaction proton pump inhibitor. I've used a variety of differetn PPI medications including Protonix, Aciphex and Prevacid. Prozac can cause some dyspepsia (i.e. upper GI discomfort - occurs in 6 to 10 percent of cases), but I am not aware of a direct connection with acid reflux specifically.  If you note an association with starting Prozac and your GI symptoms, you may want to discuss stopping or modifying your regimen with your personal physician.

Modify your diet and eliminate all the high-acid foods associated with reflux. Try sleeping on two pillows to elevate your head to prevent the reflux during the night. I was found to have Barrett's esphagus on examination with endoscopy and have had many endoscopies. Each time they do one, they biopsy that area of tissue. There's very little left of the Barrett's tissue since I've begun treatment with Protonix and other PPI's. If the regime you're currently on isn't working, get to the doctor and try another drug. By letting these symptoms continue, you're putting yourself in danger of developing something more serious, like Barretts.

When I refer to the big bleed it's in reference to periods that were very very heavy with blood clots.  I've had two and with the second one I got an ablation so it wouldn't happen again.  The ablation was successful.  I wasn't on prozac when I started getting the acid reflux or any meds.  I wasn't taking anything, not even vitiamins.  Now after the big bleed I'm on everything it seems.  I won't take supplements, they are not proven to work.  I'm keeping an eye on this acid reflux, I won't just ignore it and keep seeing the doctor to make sure I'm not in any danger.  Thank you for your advice I will mention the medicine you are using, maybe it needs to change.  All I know is that once I had my heavy periord, which drained me completely, I then had acid reflux which I never, never had before.  I'm associating it with perimenopause (hormone imbalance) because I also all at once got all the  other symptons of perimenopause.  I'm hoping with readjusting my hormone levels I will finally be rid of the problem.

I don't think that the hormonal changes and acid reflux are related. I can only tell you that I was prescribed a medication to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis during menopause, the drug is called Fosamax (Alendronate) It was approximated one year after taking this caustic drug that I developed GERD. There are little pumps inside the lining of the stomach called proton pumps that pump acid into the stomach to aide digestion. There might be too much acid and it causes indigestion and heartburn. Taking a drug like Prilosec or Protonix are proton pump inhibitors that relieve GERD. Unfortunately long term use of PPI's can also restrict absorption of vital minerals like iron, calcium and B12.

It's common that women have acid reflux during perimenopause but hormone replacement only is FDA approved for vaginal dryness, hot sweats and sleepiness.  So much more research needs to be done in this area.  I just don't understand how I can go from no problems, no medication to a big menses bleed and onset of so many problems.  I do think it's a hormonal change, it wasn't gradual it was boom, here you go all within 2 weeks.  Acid Reflux, depression and fatigue.  Not just a little it was like a bomb went off in my body.  I thought I was going to die it was so severe. I'm getting better but I will never forget what happened to me.
