Acid Reflux, Internal Burping

Hi Ladies,
I've been lurking for a while and have been reading the many threads and can relate to so many. I am going on 47 and I'm sure I've hit the perimenopause stage although my practice nurse says I can't be because I am still regular! Notwithstanding that my monthlies have gone from 34-36 days all my life to 28-29 days for the last 12 months. Anyway, I digress. For some time I have been suffering a lot from acid reflux and more of this kind of internal burping straight after I eat or drink anything. It also occurs randomly throughout the day, I wake up with it and its driving me mad. I went to see the practice nurse earlier in the year and she prescribed Omerprazole but after a couple of weeks changed me to something else in order to do a h-pylori test (which came back clean). Life kind of got in the way and I didn't go back yet I am still suffering on a daily basis. Eventually, I plucked up the courage to have a telephone appointment a couple of weeks ago and I'm back on 4 weeks of Omerprazole, if it doesn't improve then I need to go back and I'm likely to be referred for a camera down my throat. Now I have also have major health anxiety and anxiety in general so this scares me to death. I personally can't see any difference on these pills. I eat fairly clean, don't drink much and avoid most of the triggers but still suffering. I have read many times that acid reflux at this stage in life can be a result of changing hormone levels. I would love to hear from others who have similar issues, what they have been on, whether they have had any further tests and whether there are any more natural methods I can try to alleviate my symptoms? Big thanks x

I have the same thing. It feels like an internal hiccup/spasm. It sometimes even wakes me up and I have been put on Lanzoprazole for acid reflux although it does not seem to be making a difference. Awaiting liver and gall bladder scan blood tests have come back normal xx

Hi Claire,
Thanks for the reply. Yes that's exactly what its like. It seems to be getting worse not better and these pills aren't making a blind bit of difference. I last had bloods done in February and I presume they were all clear because I didn't hear anything back. I suffer with a lot of post nasal drip and often stuffed up so wonder if that's something to do with it too. I hadn't even finished my tea tonight and I was getting the internal hiccups. Just dreading ringing back as I know she will refer me for the camera down my throat. xx

hi Katie
Ive had exactly the same issues which started 4 years ago. I had the usual antiacids but they didn't help long term. My anxiety was through the roof as ive never experienced this. I knew I was going through perimenopause as I got severe headaches and liver pain first.
The third symptom was painful bloating, acid reflux and burping. I had an endoscopy all fine. Liver scan all fine and stomach scan too.
Then my bowels were all over the place. really bad piles but had colonscopy too all fine.
After all my scans I felt fine as anxiety made it double worse. I dont eat certain foods, stay away from alcohol and have a probiotic every day and eat a Mediterranean diet.

Hey Katie...
I am in the LAST stage of menopause, hence, post-menopause! That being said, I, too, have issues with acid reflux, and it was absolutely horrific!! At the time it occurred, I was in the perimenopausal stage. Suffice it to say, it came and went! I didn't take anything because COUNTLESS meno stages are synonymous with hormonal imbalance, which WREAKS HAVOC on us women-folk! Make sure you are drinking PLENTY of H20; dehydration doesn't help any symptom, it only escalates it. Like most menopausal symptoms, the AR will pass; just TRY to practice patience, believe me, I know it's hard!! I have been there, and I just wanted it to CEASE! That being said, be well, my menopausal sistah!

Whatever I eat, I wish for death. I have an appointment for gastroscopy. I was prescribed omeprazole a year ago, it killed me. I got to the point that I couldn't swallow solid food. I mix water and blended food to force it down. Barely eat 300 calories per day and I don't know how I'm going to manage my job. I've stopped eating with my colleagues because I need to pour a pot of warm water into my bowl. This is the only reason I cry all the time. So panicked if it never stops forever although some ladies here assured me it will. I'm afraid it hurts my digestive system. I stopped omeprazole and I feel so much better. I started chewing gums, helped a lot and drink warm water. They say not to eat citrus but I want to try. Then I just try to stay positive and suffer.

Hi, did you get your gastroscopy? I'm still suffering. Had omeprazole for 4 weeks but don't think it made a difference. I need to go back but been so busy and dread being put back on pills that don't seem to work and will be referred for a camera down my throat.

Hi Katie, not yet. Holidays and other things. I've been so much better after stopping Omeprazole. I think pantoprazole gives a better feeling. I've started drinking fresh orange and lemon juice half an hour after drinking my blended food. I know doctors tell you not to eat fruit but it saved my life. Now, I have a very restrict diet. I do a lot of meditation with a teacher who knows my situation. Sounds strange but I sometimes have a session of meditation of talking/ nagging/ crying with my stomach and then with my husband! (because I hate him that he isn't experiencing my hell), helps a lot. But anyway, hormones are stronger and the post menopause terrifies me. Try boiled green beans and cottage cheese, saved me. I had a very bad nausea after drinking orange juice for two days but now, I'm fine. Drink a lot of water and eat very little. I hope you feel better soon.

hi katie
yes Ive had really bad acid reflux for 4 years now! It turned my life upside down. I had endoscopy all fine. Definitely perimenopause as my bowels changed too and I had a colonscopy in March all clear.
I manage it with cutting all greens out like brocolli beans, popcorn and anything that irritates it. I've tried so many probiotics and finally found some that calmed down my acid reflux. Thankfully I only get a bad attack twice a year and take antiacids prescribed by the Dr for a week.
however I've got a bloated stomach and never know when it's going to end!!!! I surround my with positive people and don't get stressed as anxiety makes its worse. I've suffered with bad health anxiety.
Just get it checked out and you'll be reassured and look into how you can manage it

well I'm still suffering! Nothing is making it any better. Been back on Omeprazole for about 6 weeks now and it hasn't made any difference. Still getting so much internal burping. Waiting for a date for an endoscopy. Its driving me crazy, Im worrying that it is something far more sinister. Tried all sorts of natural remedies but they havent workes either. Really fed up of it now
