Acid Reflux medicine

Posted , 7 users are following.

I have foot neuropathy for several years. I now have an acid reflux issue and am taking PRILOSEC, an over the counter acid reducer. It has helped the reflux but my foot neuropathy is worse than ever, terrible burning and soreness. Has anyone encountered this problem?

    Hello,

Please can you tell here are the foot pains are? And does anything set them off?

    Thanks

      Hello,

The neuropathy is located on the front of the foot (the sole of the foot) just beyond the toes. Burning and numbness are the major symptoms. I am going to try acupuncture. Thanks for your reply.

I have neuropathy in both hands, arms and occasionally my foot. The only thing that helps is hot weather which I get while on holiday in Italy. If you have been taking a PPi for a long period of time, it can block the absorption of Vitamin B12 which can cause neuropathic symptoms or make pre existing ones worse. Maybe stop the PPI and switch to an over the counter H2 blocker to see if the neuropathy improves.

However, it is also possible you are having a bad flare up of your neuropathy which is not being made worse by the PPI. Neuropathy tends to come and go with some days worse than others.

Hi Mary Ann, it hasn't happened to me but I read that omeoprazole and statines (for colesterol) are bad for neuropathy. The first one blocks the body's capacity to absorb vit B12. Although it's said that happens after a long period of time taking it..

Also PPIs cause loss of magnesium as well as B12 and Iron, all extremely important for function of your whole system.

Ask for a blood test, and in particular to cover those elements.
