Acid Reflux -Night Time Misery

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hi everyone, I have just joined the group and this is my first post.

About April time last year I developed chronic chest pain and went to my gp. concerned, he sent me to A&E. i had numerous tests done, which confirmed my ticker was ok. They said it was likely to be acid reflux, so I went back to my gp who gave me Omeprazole 20mg a day. it quickly got worse so i was tested for Helicobacter Pylori, which was positive, i was advised that 2 courses of strong antibiotics and lanzoprazole in one week would sort it. it didnt, so I was sent for the camera down which showed I have esophygytis . that was on 8th January, my gp referred me to a gastroenterologist but my appointment was cancelled. even though I am on 40mg of omeprazole a day, it has progressively got worse to the point that I cant lie down in bed. i have to sleep bolt upright, which is not comfy at all, but even doing that i often wake up choking with what feels like is the acid reflux/fluid in my lungs, I cough and cough, I can hear it ruttling in my chest, its painful and the taste in my mouth is vile. It sometimes wakes me up by coming out of my nose. it's very scary and the next morning and for a day or two I feel really unwell, I ache all over, joint pain, chills and feel incredibly tired. I am afraid to go to sleep as I'm sure I'm going to choke to death. I had a phone appointment with a Dr, who quite frankly was much use as a chocolate fire guard and just suggested taking both tablets at night, i tried for a week but it didnt help and I suffered more throughout the day. I am waiting for the specialist appointment. To say it is making me miserable is an understatement. if anyone is unfortunate enough to suffer similar I would love to hear from you, any help or advice would be very much appreciated. xxx

    hi rossi,

your stomach probably can't handle acid food.

I recommend you to drink raw vegetables mixed by a juicer. you can either buy smoothies and tell them what to put inside or buy a juicer which costs 500 dollars. I red in this forum about a book called Acid watcher. In this book you find out what you can eat. There's a 28 day plan inside too.

It's probably important that you get enough vitamins. chicken and fish is also recommended. no diary instead almond milk.

All the best! I pray you get better!

Hi, Rossi, just a quick reply to say how sorry I am that you are feeling so unwell. Would there be any future in getting back to your referring doctor and ask if they can speed up your appointment? I too sleep bolt upright and think that you do not get a proper level of rest. I get aches and pains in my coccyx, back, arms and legs and find it hard to stay awake some days. Appointments seem to be slowly picking up again in the hospitals but it would help if you had some idea how long you had to wait? I would agree about The Acid Watchers diet book being useful. I expect you've already heard the advice about not eating for a few hours before bed? Sorry I can't be any real use to you but hope you get a breakthrough very soon. I have been trying to get answers for nearly 4 years and the anxiety and depression are unbearable sometimes. Good luck.

hi, I am sorry you are suffering too. I must admit, it really is starting to get me down, I am not sleeping well and despite sleeping upright i am still getting the acid reflux quite badly at night. my gp sent a letter to the gastroenterologist to get me put back on the waiting list. i got a letter 2 days after speaking to my gp saying the hospital would contact me by the 29th to book am appointment, if not to ring them. i did earlier only to be told i was on a waiting list, no indication of the length of wait and no booking of appointment. I asked why the letter said I would get an appointment (it's even highlighted in yellow in my letter). she said standard letter, well why make me wait 2 weeks to be told I cant make an appointment, dont know it's a standard letter! I am so angry and quite upset about it. I am waiting now for my gp to call me. 😥😥 I hope you get some resolve and feel better soon xxx

Thanks, Rossi, you too. Appointments seem to be picking up locally but there's obviously a backlog. Hope your GP is helpful. I constantly badger mine but they label you then as an anxious person. Difficult not to be anxious when you can't eat or sleep and you can see the effect this is having on your family. Let us know how you get on. Best wishes.
