Acid reflux not responding to any treatment

I am a 21 year old who is in college. About a year ago I was extremely stressed and noticed a lump in my throat and had bad gastritis. My stress never went away because of the medical program I am in and the symptoms are still here a year later. I have been on nexium a year and have been taking 80mgs for 3 months. The nexium doesn't seem to help much. My doctor has scheduled a endoscopy and assures me it is from stress. Has anyone?velse experienced this? I am terrified this will last forever .

    Hi Bob

I am going through the same thing! Was told by two ENTs both told me it is gerd!! I have taken Prilosec doesn’t help me either! I’ve never been told it was stress! Everyone is different! Yours could be from stress I just never heard that! It is very flusterating! At least your dr. is sending you for a endoscope that should give you answers! Mine has never suggested that! Have they ever given you anything to try and get your stress under control? I wish I could help you more, but I can’t even get answers! I just wanted to let you know you are not alone! Good Luck with finding answers!

Hi Diane, Even my second Endoscopy was normal. They even attached a wireless electronic pill into my esophagus to get a close 24 hour look at exactly what's happening. The data they received was normally. Next my gastro doctor ordered a videogram of what happens in the back of my throat when I swallow. Well it showed that I was aspirating refux into my lungs and that a weak esophagus is causing the reflux. This has also lead to a Lupus diagnosis. But a simple over the counter drug such as PepcidAC has helped reduce the reflux tremendously. I tried Prilosec and PepcidAC together for a while and then only the PepcidAC. I'm doing a lot better now.

I have not taken any medicine for the anxiety but I am thinking about asking for some. This started out of the blue with stress I'm hoping it will clear up after I settle down. What syptoms are you having exactly?

      Bob,

It feels like something is in my throat all the time with a lot of mucus! I really don’t have any heartburn though! I always want to stick my figure in my throat to push what ever it is out of the way! The dr tells me that won’t do any good!! You are going about things the right way! You are in a stressful college career! I would talk to your dr about trying to control your anxiety/stress!! Just be careful of what they want to put you on! I have been on some bad ones! They say stress can cause health issues!!! Good Luck hope you can find answers!! Also good luck with your career goals!!

Hi Diane, I have that feeling all the time especially after I eat or drink something. I'm always clearing my throat or coughing. My Gastro doctor found out that I was regurgitating and it would just pool in my throat. That among other things help diagnose my weak esophagus, and Dysphagia. Make sure it's not going into your lungs. The reflux pooling in my throat went on for at least 4 years before I was diagnosed. Now my lungs are damaged but I feel better knowing why the reflux is happening.

A Lower Endoscopy found Hyploria in my digestive system. Meds and treatment got rid of it but I still needed a hernia repair hoping that would solve my problem but it didn't help. I was prescribed anti-reflux meds and they didn't help. And now recently I was diagnosed with Lupus. That explained my reflux issue. My stomach and esophagus have been weakened by Lupus. I came across a article that said if you take Prilosec and pepcidAC together the reflux will get better. After it got somewhat better I stopped talking the Prilosec but still take 40 mgs of the pepcidAC. It is much better now compared to the way it was. I was refluxing into my throat/lungs which caused constant coughing, and from my nose with constant blowing. Had boxes of tissue in every room, in my cars and at work. It affects my sinuses, eyes and ears. All this was happening 24/7. PepcidAC is really what's helping. But the best time for me to take it is right before I eat or during. I only take one over the counter PepcidAC a day. YEA.

      Hi susan

I certainly will let you know if I find something that actually works, if I hadn't freaked out so much I would still be fine now and able to eat what I like, it's very depressing, my upper back is killing for days now, so of course now I'm worried if my oesophagus is in serious trouble, there's no end to the worry of it all, hope you get some relief soon, kate

Hi, I have had GERD for 12 years now as well as getting a lot of gastritis.  My GP told me about slippery elm,  600mg capsules brought from the health shop, please don't dismiss this is a load of tosh, that is my normal way of thinking, but having recently been to A&E convinced I was having a heart attack to be told it could be my gastritis, I was desperate, anyway, you take one capsule 20 mins before each meal.  Absolutely amazing, I was on 80mg nexium, 300mg ranitidine, gaviscon daily and still in agony, 1 month later I am down to 20mg Nexium, missing the odd day out, NO ranitidine and NO gaviscon. Google it and make your own decision, but works for me and will save me loads of money on prescriptions as well.

None what so ever.  Only feeling 100 times better. I have tried aloe vera, probiotics, digestive enzymes, charcoal etc etc, and did not really want to try anything else, but if you google them they are specifically targeted for stomach and acid etc.  The capsules contain a powder which coats the inside of the stomach making everything calm so that food etc does not burn and allows it to heal. I was doubled in agony scared to eat before I tried them.  You can buy it in powder form and take that way, but I preferred the thought of a capsule.
