Hello,

I am new to this forum but have had GORD on and off for many years about 6 weeks ago I started with a flare up but it is not responding tothe medication as it usually does. I have a burning pain in my chest through to my back and up into my right shoulder, my appetite is not good, and I am coughing a lot when I lay down.it is also making me short of breath. has anyone else experienced this.

The only thing I have changed in the past 6 weeks is I was given I large dose 20,000 units of oral vitamin D for a Vit D deficiency. someone mentioned that Vitamin D can aggrevate acid refux has  anyone else had experience of this.

Look forward to hearing from you.  L.

Well, first off, congrats for spelling it properly, as GORD and not GERD.

What medication were you taking, omeprazole?

Secondly, have you had an x-ray and/or gastroscopy?

In answer to your question meds are Lanzoperazole and buscopan, and yes I have over many years had gastroscopies more than I care to remember, also scans and x-rays thankfully all they have founed is a hiatus hernia and the lining in my gut is always inflamed.

"the lining in my gut is always inflamed"

      Do you drink much alcohol?

Also why the Vit D deficiency and so much extra needed?

No  I do not drink alchohol at all as I am intolerant of it I have autoimmune condition and because of that cannot tolerate any alcohol it brings me out in an itchy rash within 30 mins of consuming it

      ,

They didn't say what had caused Vit D a visit to endocrinology for suspected adreanal problems flagged it up it was very low they said.

I have decided because my gut is so sensitive I am going stick to sunshine in the summer 15 mins apparently gives you 20,000 units and in the winter will get a sun lamp like my dad used to sit us in front of when we were kids, old fashioned remedies often the best !!!!!!!  L.

Yes, natural Vit D or any Vit for that matter is always best.

You have just taken me back 40 years, with the mention of the sun lamp. Yes, my dad got one of those in the '70s as well, and the red googles, don't forget them.

      Thanks Gillian,

You have confirmed my suspicions I only wish I had realised sooner they put me on 20,000 units twice weekly for 7 weeks ,  when the reflux and severe pain staretd I just thought I was in a flare up it was only when the meds were not working I realised something else was going on, I have had gastric problems for many years and usually when I have  aflare up the meds Lansoprazole and Buscopan kick in really quickly but it just continued to get worse, it was only then I twigged. on reflection it was about a week after I started Vit D that it started. Can you recall how long after you changed the ones that were affecting you it got better.

      Thanks again  L.

Give itchy a week and it should starry to settle down again I would try looking for some other ones to take if I was you because I tried ones from doctor and couldn't take any of them I think the drops are better but as I say go for the ingredients keep away from flavoring and extra virgin oils better hope it all settles down for you

Give it a week that should say

Also PPI medication stops your body absorbing Vit D

You learn something new everyday. I've been on omeprazole for the last three years. First bit of spring sun and I go a dirty brown colour though.

I would be concerned about the Vit D deficiency. Do you never go outside? Not sure if that would have any effect on the acid though.

See your Dr and listen to him.
