Acid reflux symptoms ?

Hello !! A few days back I went to the ER for pain/burning in my chest and after a few tests, I was diagnosed with heartburn and acid reflux. I was wondering if my symptoms are usual of acid reflux, because i've been very worried about it. Mostly, i've been having a burning across my chest, painful hiccups/burping, a slight bitter taste in my mouth, a occasional sharp chest/back pain. Is this normal ?

I'm only 19 and have been suffering from severe anxiety, which my doctor told me could be making it worse. I'm going to see my primary doctor either tomorrow or the next day, but i'd like to hear from others who suffer from acid reflux ! Thanks

to answer your question your symptoms are normal and typical of acid reflux try not to stress and stay away from trigger foods. the more you stress the worse it will be this is absolutely true if i stress or go into a panic my acid reflux becomes unbearable but i also have gastritis. i try meditation calm breathing and a good healthy diet that avoids my trigger foods. good luck acid reflux is no fun!

Sadly you seem to have typical acid reflux which is a condition you will have to learn to live with. It is painful, and uncomfortable, but the doctors dont have much to offer. Yes, there are some meds, but you will have to learn the triggers that cause your problem. Food is important, and experimenting which is good for you is vital. Speaking of which, for me breakfast is troubling. I keep trying different cereals with mixed results. Tried Rice Krispies today only to have a painful result. Any ideas would be gratefully

Good luck with controlling your condition , and be blessed

Milk can be a trigger for reflux as well as certain grains and sugar. I cannot have milk without it really upsetting my stomach. It maybe the lactic acid. There is a lactose free milk you could try.

Like the others have said this is typical of reflux and heartburn. Anxiety definitely can make it worse, I used to get painful hiccups a lot before I was on nexium/esomeprazole. Hormones can also play a part in reflux, so if you keep a period diary as well as a note of when you get your worst symptoms there is usually a pattern and you can prepare for the next month. I get bad reflux around ovulation time and before my period, so I will take a higher dose of medication then.

Try to avoid acidic foods and drinks, google acidic foods and you can get a list. Also chewing sugar free gum is good for neutralising acid. Also when you do eat, try and do it slowly by chewing a lot.

If you are on certain medications, they can give you reflux, like ssri tablets or anti inflammatory pain medication eg. ibuprofen. Try and get help for your anxiety by talking to a therapist, they can be so beneficial by giving you coping mechanisms and helping you relax naturally. Anxiety can lead to other health problems, so try and fix it while you are still young and healthy.
