Acute constipation

Hello

I am 52 female....no children

have history of disc disease.

Been without insurance for years. I live by my self. And am broke. No money for insurance

2 trips to ER 1 Week apart for acute constipation. I went because of pain.

The pain is unreal. lower left abdomen.

I have been having regular bms....I was shocked when the ct scan showed acute constipation....1st trip ct scan with and without iv contrast. Ultrasound showed fibroids. Ekg..normal. Bloodwork normal.

1st Dr put me on antibiotics and doxylamine.I am still having a great deal of pain. It's not chronic...but happens 1 to 2 hours after I eat.....lasts 7 to 10 hours....basically until I eat again.

So fast forward 1 week. And I am hungry.

So I go to work....have broth for breakfast and chicken for lunch. Then a couple hours later I am in so much pain I head to Er.

Repeated ct scan ..... still constipated.

This Dr sends me home with mag citrate and emena. Says I need to go see GI specialist. By morning I have several Bms.

enemas

Saw the Gi specialist $400.00 nurse practitioner. She said no sign of anything else other then constipation. Gave me 2 samples lintenz and trulance. recommend I also start on miralax.

Started on lintenz.......it helped a little but once again after eating I am in so much pain I have idea how I stayed at work. So I called and talked to her assistant. She recommended that I add the trulance (she said dont take it and leave the house).Along with the miralax. So I am scared to eat anything.....friends/family said try boost/insure. Tried it...as we had a very busy surgery schedule (reg vet tech since 1990). Nope puked that up straight away. So I called again. Suggested high fiber diet trulance....lintenz...and miralax.

And she would call in doxylamine ...the meds that slows gi down? I asked to stop one of the laxatives and go on pain meds like gabapentin....she said it may mask something.I have not filled the doxylamine. Yet I want some to explain to me why I am on 3 laxatives and she wants to put me on something that will slow my colon.

She recommended another ct scan....why not xray if they want to know if I am still constipated.???? (cheaper)

I have been constipated before. But until all this pain started I never knew pain like this. And I felt no need to go....and have been going.....last night I was up most of the night passing liquid..slightly grey stools. In other words hardly any stool at all.

My gut sounds like there is a war going on. no gas pains but gurgling.

Has anyone ever had this from acute constipation? Left side is where I feel the pain.

Sorry so long....but I am frustrated.

I work in the medical field and my patients cant talk. I have to be able to work. With a clear mind.

I feel like I am being dismissed without insurance....no money to make here...whose next?

I assume you live in the US, since you mention insurance. I would find a reputable colon hydro-therapist. Although you have been having bm's, they were not complete. I suspect that you have a build up of hard crusted fecal matter along your colon wall that is both restricting things from moving through efficiently and also restricting nutrient absorption. I agree that it doesn't make sense to be on 3 laxatives and something to slow your gi tract down.

Colon hydro-therapy is an alternative or complementary treatment so you will have to pay for it but it will help to clean you out and then you can add fibre, lots of water, good food, restrict sugar and add a good quality probiotic to help with parastalsis.

    Good luck.

Lintenz was helping...I didn't know how much until I ran out. rx is I cannot afford. It's a 90 mile round trip to pick up free samples. I am gonna double the metamucil until I can get there. a diet of high fiber has helped

I have been pain free for days with out the rxs....just metamucil.

This is a dumb question but the pain comes back after intercourse.its hours later...but....my partner thinks it is related.

Any thoughts if this could be related?

Definitely go for colonic irrigation asap. Try not to eat anything the day of your appointment and get a complete colon cleanse. Your body may be getting resistant to the laxatives. Colonic irrigation will definitely help.
