Acute Pancreatitis with no sickness

Hi, I’m 22 years old and have been smoking weed for about the past 6 years and started drinking heavily about a year into college. Mainly binge drinking if I do say. I started having pain under my left rib cage a couple of days before before thanksgiving. So going on about 3 weeks now. The night before thanksgiving I hit a little weed and maybe 20 minutes after, had an extreme back ache on the left side which then radiated down to my left side right under my rib cage. I went to a nearby urgent care where the pain subsided a bit but was ultimately still painful under my rib cage, which felt like a clinched fist was sitting there. The Dr prescribed me Pepcid and sent me on my way, as only my amalayse was slightly elevated. Blood work, and urine came back normal. Abdominal X Ray was normal as well. The next 3 days were rough as I had constant pain that really only seemed to subside when I was laying down. Went back 2 days later still hurting, looking for more answers as the Dr before told me only to stay away from alcohol, didn’t mention any food diet or anything. The next visit was where I was diagnosed with what they said was acute pancreatitis with no infection. Oh and this was the same urgent care, just a different Dr who said he wasn’t going to do any more test because I wasn’t showing any different symptoms from the previous visit. As the day went on the pain started to subside and gradually get better over the following days. Only really was in bad pain for about 3 or 4 days. But in the following 2 weeks I have lost a total of 10 pounds Up to today. Initially I wasn’t eating as much as normal because of the pain, but even after returning to eating meals that consist of low-fat and lean meats, I am still consistently dropping weight. Went in for a follow up yesterday and weighed in at 168, down 7 pounds from what I originally was when I went in for the first attack, then today I’m down to 165. Poop has varied from diarrhea, light brownish yellow, to normal sometimes, to soft at others. Symptoms are not completely gone but significantly better than before. Only the occasional Bloating and slight pain sometimes throughout the day, and sometimes getting a feeling as if I have something stuck in my throat. Not painful, just annoying, as most times it comes after eating, even as I try to wash it down with consistent water. I just think it’s odd that I am losing consistent weight without even having a severe attack? No hospitalization, no nausea, no vomiting, no fluids, nothing. Just the initial attack, and the follow up symptoms that I mentioned above. Does anybody think this may be something more serious? Embarrassingly enough I have been on google and saw that pancreas cancer was an option. But I’m so young and it is very very rare for someone at my age to have pancreas cancer. Should I be worried?

It took the doctors over a year to diagnose me and I dropped 40 pounds within the first six months. I don’t have pancreatic cancer, I have Pancreas Divisum which has now caused chronic pancreatitis. The unintentional weight loss is a symptom of pancreatitis especially if you’ve changed your diet to low fat, etc. I wouldn’t worry too much regarding the weight loss … it should plato … if it doesn’t then I would ask for an EPI test so they can check for malabsorption.

Will, marijuana can cause pancreatitis as can alcohol as you've probably discovered during your research. Marijuana can cause a variety of GI issues in some people actually so it seems you might be one of those people who can't tolerate it, enough said, stop it. As you said you're young so take control now and hopefully prevent the disease from ruining your future. It's a ghastly disease which can be life threatening, you definitely don't want it. You may be able to prevent it from progessing to chronic.
You have all the symptoms of acute pancreatitis so you must also stop drinking alcohol and adopt a low fat diet. Get a referral to a gastroenterologist who specialises in the pancreas if you can. Get it sorted properly from the outset. good luck.
