I have been told not to take more than 20 mg/day which is the physiological amount of cortisone the body produces naturally when not having adrenal insufficiency/Addison's disease. Taking more is bad and causes more side effects even developing Cushing's syndrome. I have been taking 20 mg/day since April 2017 and I do not have low blood pressure, I feel quite capable of having a normal life.
But there is a need to increase the amount of HC when having the flu, infections, visiting the dentist, surgery etc., ****times when the body is under excessive stress. The doctor should give you proper information on how to increase it by. It is a bit complicated. This second part of my information is correct.
As for the first paragraph, **please ask a doctor or specialist, do not go by information you get in the forums as it can be wrong for you. **

My endo prescribed total 20mg a day in three doses of 10 at 8am, 5 at 1pm and 5 at 6pm (assuming your day is 08:00 to 23:59, slide appropriately if not).
But if you had a normal HPA axis, your cortisol (natural hydrocortisone) would ramp up if you get sick or injured. Since yours doesn't, you have to do so yourself, which means double dose until you are back to normal.
If you have a serious injury (or have been just too ill to keep your tablets down), you need 100mg injection pronto. So you need to keep an emergency kit at home for such eventualities because you can't assume that the ambulance will arrive before you conk out.

I should have said that this dose is for people whose adrenals produce no or nearly no cortisol naturally. Your dosage will depend on your blood tests and your doctor will have prescribed to match. So in case you missed it first time, let me echo Cool Catalan:
