If a patient "acquires" bed sores during a spell in hospital. should it have been noticed when it was developing and should it have been cleared up before being discharged back home.

I dont know which country you are in but in UK any patient who develops bed sores during a stay in hospital should have this recorded in their Hospital records, sometimes even photographed for reference, and also the treatment recorded that has been recommended for the condition. Medication and instructions should be given to the patient to be used at home. If its assessed as a bad case of bed sores then a local nurse may be asked to visit for daily assessment and dressing.

If a patient has been discharged home and no mention made of developed sores or treatment, that is a case for complaint, but do ask your GP to assess first. He/she may want to make a complaint on your behalf.

    Hope that helps.
