Adult scoliosis

hi

im due to have an operation on 30th march.  I have two curves on my spine. I am having screws and cages but to be honest that's as much as I know.  The surgeon has explained everything but to be honest I don't seems to be able to take it all in. I am trying to be optimistic but my biggest worry apart from the operation (but I feel like this is out of my control).  My main question is can anyone give me a time frame for milestones and what to expect post op. I would be grateful for any advice you can offer.

    Hi Susan,

I had a near total spinal fusion last July. I am fused T4-S1 with Harrington rods and 25 screws! My doctor supplied me with a paper back book to read pre-operatively. It was most helpful. That being said, nothing can fully prepare you for this surgery! And I am 9 months out from surgery and still have pain in my sternum and upper back. But my lower back is great! Which is a tremendous relief!! My doctor and PT tell me its too soon and this pain I am having will go away. So you are going to need a lot of patience.

The initial post-op pain is tremendous. Ask for Dilaudid for pain management. Morphine, IMO, just will not do.

If you will get up and get moving you will be much better off. Walk, walk, walk! And then walk some more! Don't let the pain get ahead of you. Get medicated on a regular schedule.

I am 54 yrs old. My surgery took 8 hours. I would do it all over again!

It is still hard some days. And I get frustrated at times. But I have to remember this is a long process.

I wish you good luck. And contact me if you would like to talk. Good luck and keep moving!
