Advice about Graves Disease

Hi everyone.

My name is Oliver, 27 years old and recently been diagnosed with graves disease.

I had been feeling under the weather for some time but I put it down to working shifts and a two hourly commute each day. I started with chest pains a couple of months ago so decided to go to the doctors.

At first a blood test gave my gp reason to believe I have graves disease. At that time I was referred to see a specialist. Since then, I had a ultra sound of my neck, liver and heart and now the gp has reffered me as urgent. I'm still waiting for a appointment at this time. At the moment I haven't been prescribed any medication.

I've been asked to see my gp tomorrow. The receptionist phoned me the other day to arrange this. Does anybody have a idea of the reason for this?

I have all the usual symptoms: chest pain, pounding heart, a high heart rate (32 beats per 15 seconds) sensitive to heat, sweaty, fatigue and shaking in the hands and legs. I'm hoping to get seen in the next few weeks and get a hold of it. At the moment I get out of breath just walking down the stairs, never mind up them.

Nice to meet you all and I hope you are all winning against graves disease.

I originally had the same symptoms. My gp put me on metoprolol for my heart beat until I could get in to the specialist. Then I was out on methimazole. I was originally taken off the metoprolol and I have continued with the methimazole and have been on that for a year and a half.

You certainly seem to have a lot of Graves' symptoms. Have you noticed any weight loss? Not everyone loses weight but I think I lost about 9 lb before I realised I had something wrong. I just thought I was suffering stress as I had a really horrible job at the time. My GP diagnosed my Graves within 24 hours and put me on carbimazole. I hope your GP is planning something similar assuming you are hyperthyroid. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the replies. Hope you are well.

I've had the symptoms for just over twelve months. Although they are not nice, you learn to deal with it. The chest pains and pounding heart are the biggest worry. After your replies, I'm suprosed my GP didn't prescribed anything? Maybe the appointment tomorrow is to prescribe something until I see the specialist.

As far as weight goes, I have lost weight but not a drastic amount. But I have noticed I am eating more.

The main concern for me ate the chest pains. What damage could this be causing. Will there be any repercussions in the future? I have to be careful not to exert myself too much.

Thanks for the good luck. Hopefully I'll be prescribed some medication tomorrow to see me right until the specialist. What kind of medication should I expect to be prescribed?

Do you experience the same problems?

Thanks for your help much appreciated.

I actually lost almost 30 pounds but I had it to lose. LOL. But now that I'm on medication, I have gained almost all of it back. My only symptoms now is I always seem to be tired. Not sure if it's the medication.

I did not have chest pain but racing heart beat but you will no doubt be prescribed a betablocker for that which acts pretty quickly. I was given propranolol. Yes you will eat more, which is great as long as you remember to stop eating as much when you start taking the medication because as Debbie has stated, you will unfortunately put it all back on again lol. I like Debbie started to feel really tired and was constantly freezing cold so felt I'd gone a bit hypo instead so I reduced my carbimazole by one tablet a day and now I feel great.

I would go to an Emergency Department if I had to wait to see a specialist. I am not sure where you live, possibly England? I am not familiar with their Health System but I would imagine they have Emergency Departments.

The heart symptoms need to be treated until further tests can be done. I was given Propranolol to lower the rapid heartbeat while I was completing testing for Graves. If you see your doc tomorrow, you can ask him about that.

    Good morning.

I will definstely make sure I don't go over board on the eating lol. Now Xmas is out of the way it's a good time to hit the diet.

After initially visiting your GP, hos long after before you saw the specialist please? Uve been reffered as urgent on the 9th December ans received a letter today saying my appointment is the 4th February. Is this a bit.am time frame for urgent?

The doctor still wants to see me this afternoon.

Hopefully I'll be prescribed the beta blockers. Does your blood pressure have to be high? Because the initial doctors appointment it was normal.

Hopefully today I'll have a clearer view of what's happening and the next steps from here.

When you had been diagnosed and prescribed medication, had all your symptoms subsised? Such as heart rate, heat intolerance, sweating, weight loss etc.

    Thanks

My blood pressure was not high. I went to my GP in April and didn't see the specialist until June, but my GP put me on the beta blocker. So I was on the blocker from April to June.

As bizarre as it sounds I have never been referred to a specialist which I will shortly be taking up with my GP as I feel quite certain now that this is what he should have done. That said though, I do feel fine in myself but perhaps I should be better monitored. Good luck with the GP this afternoon. Yes, am definitely on a strict diet now Xmas is over lol. Jeans are pinching a bit so that's a bad sign lol.

Debbie, did your GP not give you carbimazole as well? I' m not sure that my GP was right to prescribe me the medication without a referral to an Endo so I do have concerns.

No just the beta blocker. My endo prescribed me methimazole and I was on both for a little while. Now just taking 10mg of the methimazole. Have been doing that for a year and a half. Still can't get my numbers regulated. Not sure what is next.

    Hi all

Just been to the doctor and I've been prescribed beta blockers 80mg. She said that will help until I get to see the specialist. Thanks for your replies. I need to spend time reading the forum now to get a better understanding.

Good luck Oliver, but I am sure the betablockers will help.

Has anyone ever had any issues with their pituitary gland not producing TCH?

I have been diagnosed with graves in October 2013, Have had many of the symptoms for a couple years thought I was going through metopause. finally in oct, is when I started the medicine I have been watching my weight for 3 years doing well, since nov. I have gained 15 pounds, I eat healthy like always I am on 20 mg of Methimazole still not feeling well. sluggish all I get from the doctor is your totals are getting better. I go again in February and hoping to find more answers. He won't give me totals so when I go either hand me over the totals or I am going to another doctor. My headaches are often (never have had headaches until I started the med,) my hair is falling out and now I am retaining water in my legs don't know whats going on but upset.
