advice about taking medications

I struggled with anxiety for a long time. Now I decided to take some medications. I heard about Valium, Prozac, Citalopram. Could anybody give me any advice about this or others drugs.

Why don't go and see a doctor. Maybe taking medications will not be necessary.

As I understand it, Citalopram is a drug that you take over a long term, and is not supposed to be addictive (although there are side effects when starting and stopping the drug).  It can take 1-8 weeks before a benefit is felt.  (I felt better after perhaps 4-5 days.)  Valium, Atavan, Xanax, and similar are for immediate relief of anxiety.  They are supposed to work quickly - but also fade quickly.  There is also a higher likelihood of addiction.

I would definitely recommend talking to a doctor.  Also, read about the side effect so that you know what to expect.

I started on Citalopram because I was in such bad shape, but my intention was to use the time I was on the drug to spend a fair amount of time on non-drug interventions: CBT, breathing exercises, art.  The research that I have read shows that meditation is one of the most powerful solutions around, but only positive side effects.

I'm also looking into neuro feedback - which mimics some of the benefits that meditation provides.

    Best wishes -

Hello, I'd suggest making an appointment with gp or physiatrist for meds, to talk and get options available to you. Talk therapy also good. There are many antidepressants and even newer ones. The less you take the better. Cymbalta was a life saver for my anxiety. Effexor also. But your doc would know best by listening to your symptoms, as these meds work differently for all of us. Tell him your biggest issue and he will know what to try. Keep us posted.😊
