Advice and Help needed

Hello all.

This is my first time on this forum and ask for advice on my current situation.

First my story... I am a 36 year old male who suffers from very bad Bruxism which has shifted my teeth greatly. I wear a custom NightGuard but has made no difference to the constant pain and pressure in my gums and teeth.

I was referred by my local Dentist to see an Orthodontist who told me braces were needed. After a few weeks I returned to him to go ahead with the braces, but was then told that Jaw Surgery was needed as I have a Malocclusion and he didnt want to charge me money when surgery was needed as it would be covered by the NHS.

He explained to me the process then referred me to the School of Dentistry.

However having now seen the Orthodontist there, he disagreed completely.

He seemed dismissive of my case. When I walked in the place was empty. 30 or so Dentist chairs and not a one in use. He stood there with his arms folded joking with the trainee staff.

He told me that there was no need for surgery or braces as it would fix nothing and would be for aesthetic reasons only.

He could not guarantee that my teeth and gums would not get worse. He told me that his teeth were worse than mine and that everybody grinds.

I was there for a total of 40 mins. 25 of those waiting for an Xray.

I now have to wait 3 months to see the original Orthodontist again.

I no longer know what to think and feel completely in the dark.

Im still in constant pain and the pressure on my teeth will not leave.

Any advice or opinion would be appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hi there,

The dentists in the UK dont seem to be that well informed about Malocclusion. I to have teeth that dont "fit" together and overlap like they should.

If I were you I would go for the surgery. If your top teeth end up fitting over your bottom (like they should), then its much harder to clash and grind the teeth as it will have a natural position to fit. This will also help your jaw align correctly. I dont agree with that other dentist who said "everyone grinds". To me that is a negative and backward approach.

Clearly not everyone grinds - otherwise you would see adverts all over the TV for bite guards, and grinding treatment.

Please let me know how you get on, as this is something I am also considering.

    Best Regards.

    Chimp.

      Hi, thanks for the reply.

I would have gone for the surgery only the NHS Orthodontist wont accept me for it.

In fact he said there are MAJOR complications and risks with the surgery as though he wanted to make sure I was talked out of even the possibility of it.

I got the impression that its his Job to make sure those Dentist chairs are kept empty. 🤔

Yes I understand what you are saying. Its a shame we dont live in the USA with loads of money. Plenty of specialists out there that do this kind of thing.

    All the best!
