advice appreciated re. bisoprolol and omeprazole

Two weeks before Easter started with chest pains, decided were due to stress - before Dr's appt NHS Helpline said go to hospital as increased at night. ECG showed one off atrial fib. Since then all tests including CT show all OK and no heart disease. However since I was still having chest discomfort bisoprolol was increased from 1.25 then 2.5. Hospital increased to 3.75 and ordered the CT scan. As all OK was told to stop taking the aspirin and continue 3.75 bisoprolol although was hardly having any discomfort. I have been told that the biso does not help any pain so why keep increasing it and although have asked to decrease Dr says no. Also when stopped aspirin ( know it can cause heartburn & indigestion) got both. Since had both since Nov now been prescribed Omeprazole for 2 weeks.Worried about side effects - loss of hair and if long term bone damage. Surely ok to decrease biso of heart ok? Am 62 yr female and retired in June re stress at work.

If all your heart tests were OK, then my guess is that your chest pains are caused by a gastro problem like mine. I've had a heart attack and 2 stents fitted, but still kept getting chest pain.  I discovered after a gastrosopy that it was caused by my eosophegus. Eosophegeal pain feels just like heart attack pain (same nerve junction). If this is the case, the only medications you would need are acid reducers. I am on Ranitadine (Zantec) which is strong enough for me to stop the pain. Other stronger acid inhibiters are Omeprazole and Lansiprazole etc. Good luck.

Same here, had chest pains and burnings for months, and I was short of breath too, had endoscopy , they said it looks like reflu and put me on lanpromazole. Its been a month still not feeling good sad sisko51068 did you have palpitations? Is that the reason they put you on Bisoprolol. My mother's on those, after having a stroke, her pulse was 150 ..

Thanks for all replies. I was given bisoprolol because of one off episode of atrial fibrillation which is why since all tests have showed no heart disease I asked if dosage could be reduced. It was increased each time because I was still having discomfort in chest. My blood pressure was always low before problem. Last time 111/67 pulse 47. Dr said that people have chest pains and they do not know why but as knew it was not due to the heart ' not to rock the boat' and keep same dose. I had feeling of butterflies in chest a few times but Dr said they were panic attacks. I was told to take Omeprazole for 2 weeks to see if it takes the heartburn away. I had read that bisoprolol can give heartburn/indigestion after taking for approx 6 mths for those over 60 but Dr said that far as aware it did not - this is also why I wanted to reduce.

The omeprazole is an excellent drug which will control any acid reflux due to taking other medication. I have been on omeprazole for 12 years without any side effects. I have tried a few times to stop but the acid reflux comes back within 48 hours. I have atrial fibrillation and have been prescribed a number of different drugs since October last year including most recently bisopropil and amioderone . I was only on the bisopropil for three days since I was extremely breathless and had a weight on my chest. I am asthmatic so that may be an issue when taking bisopropil . I was on a 2.5 mg dose of bisopropil twice a day .  So my GP stopped it but I am continuing with the amioderone . Cardioversion failed and the cardiologist is against doing it again so I am thinking of getting a second opinion about the best way forward. I hope you get some satisfactory answers soon. Good luck!

I was told that acid blockers like omeprazole stop blood thinners from working properly, I.e. Aspirin and Clopidogrel. So I was given Ranitidine instead.

Thanks for posting. It seems strange that Dr prescribes one medicine which seems to cause a reaction which needs another medicine. I was really worried after going on the discussion forum about Omeprazole and saw all the comments about the side effects. It also seemed strange that the indigestion and burning in gullet started after stopping the aspirin then it stopped when I took the aspirin again for a few days but I stopped again since aspirin itself can cause heartburn/indigestion. Then both came back again hence being prescribed Omeprazole. I am trying to reduce it by now taking half (10g) then 5g because the forum said that

if it is just stopped the acid comes back as before.
