Advice for Dialysis patient

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hi there.

I am currently helping to care for somebody who has had both of her kidney's removed and is on Dialysis.

One of the main issues with this is the very limited amount she is allowed to drink.

She is always finding herself really thirsty but is worried about drinking too much.

Does anybody have any advice on helping to quench her thirst without going over her allowed intake of fluids?

Thanks

If you don't receive any answers on this site, perhaps you could try putting the question to the National Kidney Federation whose website is http://www.kidney.org.uk/ Lots of good luck wishes to the person concerned and well done to you for caring.

I"ve been battling this problem for three years and have not found any short cuts to self discipline.

Dialysis tends to dehydrate you, hence the increased levels of thirst and so far as I know nobody has found a way to make it go away. One of the main problems is constant dry mouth. BUT . . . . take a drink of something and two minutes later it is dry again.

I am on dialysis and had the thirst problem. By process of elimintation I found that the main cause was the tablets I was taking for blood pressure and a heart condition.

Drugs come in 'families' of similar preparations. Talk to the pharmacist about the different 'families' and ask advice from him/her before going to the GP for a change in medication.
