After years of fullnes in the ear, hours of rotational vertigo, i finally saw a ent consultant who thinks i have 'end stage' menieres.she referred me to the audiologist for balance testing this week, which i have to say were not what i had expected.
Here are the results
Rombergs positive,
No odea about the looking at the nose head shake test,
Hearing loss is conductive not the other one,
And the hallpike one gave very mild nystagmus left side.
The symptoms i have
Hours of rotational vertigo, which have lessened over the years,
With sweating and upset stomach
Ear fullness which 'roars' before and attqck,
Tinnitus which started with attacks and is now permanent.
Sense of movements when im not moving, so i hit the deck.
He said that the bppv could be secondary to menieres, or it could be veatibular migraine.
I am due to follow up with consultant.
Does anyone have any idea?
Ive cut caffiene previously to no avail.

Certainly sounds like Meniere's to me! Cutting back on sodium in the diet is key. The latest thinking/research says that keeping sodium levels even (at 2500 mg per day) is the best and not to let it spike up (like what happens if you eat out at Chinese restaurant, for example). Also try to get a lot of sleep. If you are in U.K., they seem to prescribe Betahistine, which seems to help. Here in US, we are put on diuretics. Hopefully your follow up with the ENT will give you more options.

glad to hear that you had the balance tests, etc. and that is now behind you. I'm not sure what "end stage Meniere's Disease" means. I've had MD for 40 years (bilateral for the last year) and nothing has changed over the years.
Let me ask you some questions.....
1. what meds are you on and have you adjusted your diet....such as:
2. are you on a diuretic...if so, what dose?
3. have you eliminated salt and all alcohol from your diet (max of 1000 -1500 mg salt per day)?
4. have you had intratympanic steroid injections to ear?
5. have you been on Betahistine?
6. do you have allergies? If so, are they managed....how?
Your ENT should have or will discuss the above with you.

Ive not been offered anything like injections, all i had was cawthorne exercises.ive had systemic steroids recently and they didnt effect it.
So im not really sure!
Ive had symptoms since i was 28 im now 44.

OK, then there are protocols that you have not tried. Also, you did not mention if you have minimized salt intake...have you? If not, that is a good starting point. If you do have Meniere's Disease (ENT diagnosis) and since Betahistine was ineffective, your next step after salt restriction is to consider steroid dexamethasone injections to affected ear and/or diuretic usage. Many folks on this forum have found relief from both protocols. Please let us know how your next ENT appointment goes....and what you decide as next course of treatment....GOOD LUCK!

Dear Alfielefoo,
I also tried cutting caffeine and it didn't do anything. Lowering your salt intake helps. My last episode of vertigo was in 2007. Since then I have stopped eating sugars (my last episode was triggered by alcohol/sugar), alcohol, grains (specially glutenous grains like wheat, barley, rye) and haven't had an episode since but I have been losing hearing continuously. I have had MD and tinnitus since I was 14 and it's gradually become worse and worse. I now have 80% hearing loss in my right ear and 20% in my good/left ear.
Qi Cong and Tai Chi or any kind of relaxation/centering movements help

I have a pretty restrictive diet and just eat what i can really. Ive not touched alcohol for about 18 years as i dont like it!
I do practice relaxation also.
Thank you for your advice.
