I'm taking them for anxiety,I recently nearly choked on can you believe, mash potato,I sort of swallowed it wrong and it came back up and I panicked, since then I got a phobia of swallowing,I'm scared to swallow incase it happens again,I've lost a lot of weight and it's really getting me down now.ive had a few slight side affects, nothing that I can't cope with.i just thought by now the citalopram would have started doing something, but no change in 8 weeks and still got the same panic about swallowing as I did at the start

    Hi suek78

I would first go to my docter and tell him how u feel

You cant up the dose to hard cause each time you up you need to give it like 14 days at least

However..i have found small dose like 10mg 3 times a day better for me..

I speak to my docter weekly with progress and he monitors me..

So yes for me small amounts up to 5 times a day at the moment..

    Do you sleep well??

    Hi Suek

It depends on the person - we're all different and all need a different dose to suit our body.  8 weeks is still early days for many - best to count recovery in months, not weeks.  These meds often take a long, long time to work for some people.  It took me 6 months to recover on 20mg.

You really need to stay on one dose for a long time - if you keep chasing different meds and different doses you just give yourself side effects time after time.  Your dose needs time to settle and for your body to start healing.  Recovery often comes in waves too, so you'll feel good followed by a low time - and this pattern will repeat itself until the anxiety ceases to come.

I don't think a larger dose makes you better any quicker - you'll still go through the same up/down phase despite the dose.

Its trial and error getting your dose right.  Personally I'd stay on one dose, keep persevering and be prepared to have even more patience.

For me, my fears were with me for many, many months whilst I was on the meds and my body healed, and as my anxiety eased so my fears began to not bother me.  It was such a gradual process I hardly noticed I was improving.  It began by occasionally I'd get the odd hour when I'd feel 'normal' and happy, and slowly that time increased over the months - I'd still get days when I felt absolutely wretched and terrified.  Little by little that 'normal' time increased and my evenings started being anxiety free, then that time increased into the afternoon and then mornings.  Finally I began waking anxiety free and my fears didn't bother me.

How are you with liquids?  I think you said you have some protein shakes prescribed by the doctor too?  If you're ok with liquids, why not liquidise all your foods at the moment?  Also use a straw with the liquids and sip little bits.

Have you looked into emdr treatment? I know a couple people who've had good luck with it for traumatic experiences.

No I haven't heard of that, what is it

I really don't know all the details about it. I've only had a friend discuss how it helped her son & another friend of ours. It sounds like it has to do with joining the logical part of your brain with the emotional part to overcome extreme anxiety. The person does some type of activities that require their eyes to move back & forth while discussing the traumatic event. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is what the emdr stands for. Therapists have to be trained in it. I know it helped one individual overcome panic attacks about being in a car during bad weather after they had been in a car crash. It also helped another deal with major phobia of getting sick after a traumatic sickness. Not sure on any more details, like if works for everyone or drawbacks. Maybe something to check  into????

Lower dose for me is making me feel better than higher!!

Remember that the more you up the longer to come down again to 20mg up to 5 days recovery for me from taking 1 x 20mg every 5 hours to test the dif...i wount do it again!! So 20mg for me is much better!! But depends what you use it for and with what else you take...

    Kind regards
