hi everyone i have had a pain in my lower left side for about 8 weeks now! one day it literally just came on and never left, i was given 2 courses of antibiotics for a UTI but that did not do anything apart from give me diarrhea! then went to doctors last week and was told that its IBS and to eat lots of fibre and take buscopan. the pain on the left hand side has not left its there everyday some more painful than others buscopan helps a bit but doesnt take it away, its not a upset stomach cramps pain but more like menstrual cramps pain. i would say i am constipated and never feel like i totally finish going to the toilet and bloated and for example if i eat broccoli i have such bad bloating and gas with no sense of relief! thanks in advance

hi Kirsten, i was initially told i had IBS years ago and when i did i had awful constipation that lets me in lots of pain. did your doctor's offer you a bowel softener? i used to take fybogel or laxido -they both do the same sort of job. i think I went to my chemist when i was told i had IBS, they recommended it. these are sachets you mix in water and drink straight down once the powder settles. you could ask at least, it wouldn't hurt. if they help this sort of medication is cheaper on prescription.

Have they ran any tests on you to confirm its IBS? IBS is diagnosed as a rule by elimination of other things that can be wrong. I suffer with IBS but i was diagnosed after multiple tests, from blood work, ultrasounds, stool samples and a CT scan. I just feel that sometimes doctors can jump straight on the IBS band wagon without actually doing any real tests.

hi kileen, i agree, i think you need all the tests to see if it is TRULY IBS. i was told i had IBS originally. nope. i am coeliac! my bowel may never heal, i was NEVER told to cut out wheat, much to my detriment. i have poor bone strength, allergies and coeliac disease. it could be Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, lots of other things. push. you need many more rests. og and IBS - no such thing! it's a collection of symptoms, according to my hospital. people are diagnosed with it as it's easier than sending someone for hospital tests. good luck. x
