Advice on the dreaded D's after gall bladder removal

Hi All

Just wanted to ask a bit of advice or see if anyone else has experienced the same problem, my sister had her gallbladder removal 5weeks ago though everything has healed well ,she seems to have these painful screaming pains mainly lower bowel which then turns to explosive Diarrhoea (sorry it's a bit gross) which stinks to high heaven of old garbage with bile mixed in, she's still experiencing a lot of acid reflux/pain even though she's on Lansoprazole x2 and ranitidine x2.

She seems to have a few weeks break without pain and then it hits, and is left with pain from chest down to her bowels, could this be due to bile build??

She's on a low fat diet/ gluten free and dairy free.

Kind regards

      Hi Amy,

yes she started the higher fibre diet, but after 2wks post op the pain came on in top stomach not really much happened after that and then 2days later she had another pain attack when the Ds did kick in, fine for 17dsys and then the other attack yesterday which was lower left side bowel with the Ds again, she's still very limited as with food as every time she gets the courage to try something she gets a pain attack but there don't seem to be any clues to what triggers it, as it happens in the morning or at night when she has bland food, we do have a few hints it's coming on though as her acid/burning chest gets worse so she gets a bit quite and then bingo it happens, that's what got me thinking a long the lines of more bike than food!?!

Thanx for the reply I hope you have a speedy recovery!! smile

I had my gallbladder removed ast end of April. I was warned that diarrhoea was common for a while afterwards and that is what happened to me.

I was also told that it would settle down and it did.

I to have to be careful what to eat, mainly low fat food but i am OK with curry and spicy food.

    Hope this setlles down.

      Hi Sarah

Thanx for the reply, yeah I had read up a lot about problems after surgery which I didn't tell my sister about, the bowel motions she's fine with even the explosive ones, but not the pain.

Did you suffer any acute pain?

She's still on the low fat/dairy free/gluten free to see if that helps but obviously it's not, she's quite skinny more borderline anorexic now as no weight is going on, that's another reason why I thought digestive enzymes might help her absorb her food better and she has said it don't feel like the food is going anywhere.

Fingers crossed the gastro docs will give her a new action plan on meds, as what's she's on ain't working.

I would not call it acute pain but I do still have stomach cramps sometimes and also pain and discomfort in my back passage.

Yeah I think my sister gets the cramping/spasms after the bad Ds with the pain, but not so much if she has the normal day loose motions.

She has got buscopan to take but it seems pointless after the bad pain, as it comes on quick and lasts for about an hour.

The tricky thing with all this is not being able to pin point a cause for hers, like a certain food as she's not really having anything high fat and if she does try something new and tasty the pain and Ds don't come on for a few days or week!!

      Ruth smile
