Hi just wondering if anyone can help my 67 year old dad is an alcoholic but he's been coughing really bad to the point where he's collapsed twice as he just can't get his breath and he's coughing up white stuff sorry I took him doctors last week he sent him for bloods and xray the xray was all clear and bloods shows gamma GT levels 1023 but I already knew that he smokes 60 a day and a 70cl bottle of vodka a day so with xray being clear could this have anything to do with the drinking

You are an inspiration and a lovely son.  You have a busy life but are not giving up on your Dad. It is doubly problematic for him to quit two long term vices and will need huge willpower.  It is sad that he has to as he probably feels both vices are his main pleasures in life.

There is help available and I am sure, with your determination, something will happen for his good.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has commented I really do appreciate it and to let you know we went to doctors she said she doesn't think It's anything to do with hart as he only sleeps with one pillow and doesn't have swollen legs she has referred him to hospital for breathing tests as she's thinking copd either way don't think It looks good especially with GT levels being 1023 and ALT being 95

Hi. Your dad should definitely do more specialized tests. In this age he should take seriously your health. Apart from that the amount of alcohol and cigarettes certainly bad for health. Maybe some extra activities help, walks (good for health) and everything outdoors. For smokers is definitely a good way to improve well-being. Addiction is a really hard thing. One thing is certain - it is important to stop drinking and although limit smoking. I know it's hard, but it will certainly help. For sure he will also need a lot of support. If your dad wants to stop drinking, I'm sure he succeeds.

Fingers crossed. A lot of health for dad.

Alcohol saps you of all willpower and motivation, except of course to get more alcohol. It anaesthetises both the brain and the body.

I can't remember what was recommended on your earlier thread. But basically, he would need to get on something like nalm/nalt to kurb his drinking or watch him fade away.

Has he had ultrasounds and been advised on the state of his liver?

No ultrasound as before Xmas hospital said the lift wasn't working so they couldn't scan him all I know is GT levels where 1023 and ALT was 95 I don't really understand any of this

They are a reflection of how much pressure/ work the liver is under.

Is he booked back in for another appointment for the ultrasound? Because that is what will show the state of his liver. The ilver is a complex organ and interfaces with many other organs, it is as important as the heart or brain.

If there is cirrhosis/damage then the liver processes stop functioning properly, one of which is to provide energy for the body. This can make people very lethargic, as they have no energy.

You should be pushing for another ultrasound and soon.

We are back to see the liver specialist on the 10th of Feb so hopefully they will scan him then if not I will try and push them in i think he needs a shock to make him see what he's doing to himself because anything that's wrong with him it's never the drink like the diarrhea he's saying that's because he had piles in the past nothing to do with alcohol

Oh I do feel for you both.  He probably does know what it is doing but is in denial.  Why does something which makes a person feel so good have such awful consequences.

      God bless to you both.
