Advice please

I am very prone to migraines and have been getting them since the age of 11. I have them very frequently and have been to the doctors many times & visited a neurologist where I've tried out types of tablets to help control the migraines. Sadly none of them were effective so I came off of the medication. I am 21 now and its been just over a year and half without any medication but I'm finding that I am beginning to have migraines in clusters. Around December I had 5 different types of migraines in the space of a week. Since then I have only had 1 in January. However this week i have had 3 migraines (2 in one day). Most of the time I will have aura with them and I also get a numb left arm and sickness which i believe is a Hemiplegic migraine. I keep a diary of the day including what i eat, how long it lasts and what pain relief i take. Just wondering if anyone has any advice. Thank you in advance.

Have you tried getting botox or emgality? I have been getting migraines since I was 11 as well, but the only difference is that mine never go away, sadly. I also take 36,000 mg of gabapentin, which helps a little but at least it helps. I hope this helps a little.

Hi Abi, First, before using ANY meds even OTC check with your DR. Some meds interfere with each other or are contraindicated for specific medical conditions!! Sometimes the best thing you can do for a Migraine, if preventatives don't work, is treat your symptoms and sometimes it helps to go to sleep....If you get the aura, avoid bright lights, noise, smells...take a Triptan medication at this point (if you take them, if not, its worth asking your DR, there are many types, all work a little different, depending on person, they usually work once finding the right one) if you wait too long to take it, it may not work as well, you can use anti-inflammatories like Naproxen, Ibuprofen & etc(taking with food can prevent stomach issues)......if you experience nausea, take meds your Dr has advised for that, some OTC or by Rx...sometimes you can use a hot pack or cold pack on the effected side(they work differently, some prefer one over the other)...a lot of people have success if they can get to sleep, they wake up feeling much better....the journal is good, as avoiding triggers is the BEST preventative, sometimes you can link it to dyes/food colourings, foods(caffeine, spices, preservatives, etc..)meds(any kind really), environmental, bright lights(certain lights like florescent & new style curly bulbs can be triggers), computer screens, scents(car exhaust, perfume, laundry soap, etc)there is a long list of possible triggers...your Dr should be able to help with symptoms & you can always ask if you can get a referral to a Migraine/Headache Specialist..Good Luck, chat at me anytime...I have had Migraines for 22 yrs, currently I am stuck in a Migraine pro-drome(ALL symptoms but, headache comes & goes) plus an out of body experience continuously since 16 June 2019, non-stop it gets so bad I cannot function at all...going through testing myself, so I totally feel for you...if I can help in any way let me know...you may find other advise on here so keep reading...BEST WISHES💒🎶🌈♾🐾🍀☮

Hi Abi,
Sorry to hear you have been suffering so much, trust me this is the place to come for fellow sufferers!
As you have had so much trouble, I think you should nag your GP to get you an MRI scan at the earliest convenient appointment. This is to rule out any obvious causes. You also need a specialist consultant so they can properly assess you.
There is a whole host of different meds to take for abortive and preventative of migraine as clusters and I think I have been through the lot!
Do come back to us on here with any further questions or advice, and we will support you.
Take care

hi Abi
i totally sympathise with your pain i have had migraines also since around 11 years of age i am now 61 and still getting them i have had MRI SCANS and seen neurologist i have tried keeping a diary of when i get them and what i have eaten i tried everything leaving off wheat , cheese, chocolate, checking foods for additives but there just doesnt seem to any pattern i thought it was hormonal which of course it could be but i have had this discussion also with my doctor, i must say they dont seem to appreciate how debilitating these migraines are i have had to take time off work because im sick with them sometimes. i have also tried many preventatives but amitriptalene made me put on weight , toparmirate ,didnt work, noratriptalene didnt work but the only thing that does work is zolmatriptan prescribed by my doctor and i take this when i get them its not a preventative and it works for me i have asked my doctor to refer me to my headache doctor who was great as she suffered from migraines herself and understand which is even better and so if she can advise on something else as a preventative i can try as again i have had 3 days of it recently and seem to begetting then more frequently . i think it is a bit of trial an error and seeing what suits you everyone is different and reacts differently to tablets but i dont think we should suffer so yes i suggest you see your doctor and ask for a referral and get an MRI SCAN done at least to rule out any other issues at least it will put your mind at rest and will be a start good luck and wish you well

Think about what you look at on triggers of migraines. Analyse what you are exposed to.
