I have a 9 year old son that people have advised to get tested for autism his teachers think he may be in the spectrum as well. Everything has to be in order if anyone disrupts this order he’s in total melt down. He cannot be late for anything, including school, he has to be at least 10 minutes early else this causes him to have a melt down. He gets so angry that sometimes I fear he’s going to thrash out and hurt someone. He doesn’t seem to have any emotions. He’s thriving otherwise at school and is on target. Some advise would be appreciated

It sounds as if investigation for autism is a good idea. You could ask your school or GP to refer him to a Community Paediatrician and/or an Educational Psychologist and a Speech and Language Therapist. You could also join your local autism group to see if you can get any tips from other parents. In the meantime, it is best if you pre-warn him what will be happening (using words and visuals) and explain what time you will be picking him up from school e.g. between 3.15 and 3.30 depending on the traffic to minimise the stress he incurs and hence reduce the frequency of meltdowns

It might be autism; get him tested, but don't buy into the limitations they try to place on people with Asperger's. He may need a little extra support, but chances are he's also brilliant if he can find his niche. Expose him to all sorts of new experiences, if he'll tolerate them, so that he can find his true talents.
