Advise on partners treatment

My partner injured his knee playing football. He has a double fracture to the top of his tibula and has cracked his knee cap. He attended a & e and was admitted to hospital to have scan. The hospital decided after 4 days that they could not perform the surgery required and referred him to another hospital now 9 days on we are still waiting for a date for surgery. Is this delay dangerous or will it have a long term affect on his knee?

It will depend on what they are intending to do procedure wise, whether it will become a problem or not, are they keeping him non weight bearing completely, have they said that they are going to operate or are they considering treating it conservatively

Sometimes they have to wait for the swelling to reduce before they can operate or even put on a cast - have you spoken to the orthopaedic department dealing with it? It isn't unreasonable for you to ask about what they are intending doing.

I assume it isn't an open fracture (i.e. the skin isn't broken). If that is the case maybe the second hospital wants to try nonoperative management first - he is obviously young and fit and maybe the fracture is not displaced. Surgery is always associated with some risk of infection.
