Hello anyone out there suffering with swallowed air. Tummy inflates with air and burps. Every day. Worse with liquids. I'm getting so depressed with it. Has anybody found a way to cure this ? I'm wondering is this an air thing or a gastric thing ..

Hi Aoife, what does the doctor say? Do they think it’s related to anxiety? I swallow way more when I’m anxious and I don’t even realise I’m doing until someone points it out to me. It’s a case of being aware that you’re doing it and making sure you take long deep breaths. Easier said than done I know. I’m also someone who gobbles down food too quickly and right now I’m sipping on a fizzy drink, both bad for bloating. Need to take my own advice! I have also suffered with painful trapped wind and I also have IBS so I always make sure I have medication on hand to help relieve the symptoms. One day I had to leave work in absolute agony from trapped air but within 30-45 minutes of taking medication, it was gone. Talk to your local pharmacist for advice, I’m in the UK and get this over the counter. All the best.

I inflate with air immediately and I burp straight away to deflate.. I'm like a balloon.... I've no pain the air bloat goes after a few minutes...

I only take medication when it gets painful. For me the only way I can stop it when I’m anxious is to be mindful of the amount of air I’m swallowing and take long deep breaths to calm the anxiety, which in turn stops me swallowing so much.

Don't just assume you are just swallowing air.  My first symptom of anxiety is that I start to burp.  I was told that I swallow air but I know that I don't. Anyways I suffer from GERD and many GERD sufferers also have anxiety.  Your blood flow changes under stress and this makes changes to your digestion.  Anyways I cut bread, gluten, most carbs back and I am doing much better.
