I'm about to have a full hysterectomy as I've been diagnosed with endometrial cancer. I am 62 years old, so past normal menopause age. However I'm confused....... After the hysterectomy will ' menopause' symptoms start or am I past that and will not get any symptoms? Does anyone know the answer please?

Hi Candysausages,
firstly I just want to say how sorry I am to read that you have been diagnosed with cancer and I wish you all the best with your treatment. I am not completely sure of the answer to your question but I imagine this will depend on whether or not you will be having your ovaries removed as well. I would definitely encourage you to speak to the health care professionals that are in charge of your care to ask them any questions you may have. They will be able to give you lots of information and reassurance. Please do keep us updated with how you are doing, we will all be thinking of you.

thanks for your reply. I will of course dish to the doctors when I go in hospital next week. I know I'm having the womb, fallopian tubes and ovaries removed, but otherwise I'm clueless!

This is what I think (just my own thought process, not a medical opinion) in post menopause hormones are at a low, but stable level. I would guess that the removal of the ovaries will affect the level of hormones but will not be as drastic as what you experience in a natural menopause (where hormones can fluctuate wildly then decline over time). If you had a hysterectomy at a younger age, when hormone levels are higher, you would then experience a massive drop in hormone levels and very quickly. If you do experience any symptoms, it would be reasonable to think they wouldn't be as severe. I hope I made sense! I'm sure that your doctor will go through it all with you but it's an interesting question and I can imagine it's a lot to think about!
