After a TIA

Hi there,

My Dad had two TIA's last week then another suspected one last Saturday.  Following a week in hospital he was sent home and he said his head has been woozy ever since.  Then today he had an "episode" where his leg again went heavy, he had palpatations and was generally feeling awful.  He went to hospital again today as a precaution and is now home.  I just wondered, is it normal for these "flare ups" or whatever they are? We are so confused over it and we are on tenter hooks of it happening (or worse) at any moment.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I just want to say I think your dad should make sure he takes enough 81 mg aspirin or ASA which is the generic name for it. just my own feeling. Also blood pressure med. My MD has me on Amlodipine 2.5 mg 2xdaily. My naturopath said 2x a week is the latest recommendation for ASA. I had a 'minor stroke' last December and do experience fatigue and tiredness a lot and some visual challenges but not sure what is the cause. It seems you can never know for sure as there are so many interconnections going on biochemically in the body all the time. I am age 78 and if your dad is like me he likes to figure things out for himself.

I believe it's all a gamble anyway so I just do the research and do what I think is necessary (keeping my fingers crossed and touching wood haha).

Hi there, has your dad been sent a follow up appointment with his GP? He/she might put him on anti coagulants, or has the hospital put him on anything?

I wish your dad a speedy recovery :-)

Hi Trezzie.  Pending any formal diagnosis of your dad's ongoing issues, just to answer you original question about 'flare ups' - my neighbour had a TIA at work and was sent home and then to the hospital.  She suffered quite a few more over the following months and she was told this was about par for the course and that a little spate of TIA's rather than just one off is actually common.  After the first one and consultation with a vascular consultant, she was prescribed medication as an interim step prior to further tests etc., but still had spasmodic TIAs even whilst on the meds.  She's since had major surgery for other issues but they have reassured her the TIA's have not left her with any lasting or permanent damage, they were merely a 'warning shot'.
