After a week of problems urinating I got prostate pain - please help

Posted , 4 users are following.

For a week or so I (28yo male) had a burning sensation in my urethra during and after urination.

I quickly started taking Furagin (popular drug in my country for UTIs).

Burning sensations in penis seem to have decreased, but now since 2-3 days I'm feeling pain behind my scrotum (not sure if I'm explaining properly, basically I feel like biking would be impossible now). My testes also hurt from time to time.

I read that when bacteria from urethra leak into prostate it's called Acute Bacterial Prostatitis and it's a severe condition, so I immediately called a doctor. He told me to continue with Furagin for 4 more days, then wait a week and do urine/semen culture.

This means it will be at least 11 days before I receive antibiotics.

Do you think it's safe to wait for so long?

What type of prostatitis do you think it is?

Thanks!

You should talk to a Urologist (specialist in urinary conditions). I would get the urine/semen cultures as soon as possible. Usually they do those tests first to determine what antibiotic to use. The Urologist will probably also do a DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) to determine the size of the prostate and feel for any lumps.

If possible, see if you can get hold of URAL powder. When mixed with water and drunk it alkalanises the urine which makes the burning feeling vanish very quickly. I used it for years when radiation therapy caused a burning sensation.

I am not sure where you are but URAL is not widely available. Hopefully it is in your location.

Your doctor is probably right that you have to wait after you stop antibiotics before taking a urine culture/prostate fluid test, normally you have these tests BEFORE starting antibiotics. Furagin and Furadonine are very popular for UTI treatment but not all bacteria are sensitive to them.

At your age large prostate is unlikely (though still worth checking by an urologist), therefore infection seems to be the case, not necessarily in the prostate. If standard tests come back negative, you may wish to perform tests for the less common bacteria.

As a temporary relief you can try phenazopyridine (Azo).

If you develop fever or any visual swelling - rush to the hospital.

In the meantime you can have a blood test and if ESR or CRP are high - contact the doctor urgently.

Allondon is correct when he writes: normally you have these tests BEFORE starting antibiotics.

Tests before any meds will show truthfully what is going on.

Tests performed after meds are taken will show a version of the truth (ie the influence of meds).
