My thought was if your hip puts your foot in a different position new shoes might ease any pain

I do not know from personal experience (my first hip replacement is May), but I have asked around and people have told me that you will need to probably buy new shoes after your operation.

Oh that is music to my ears. Buying more shoes but daren't tell my husband! Seriously though I have been thinking about that as I think many of the higher heels will have to go. I think all my teenage years of high heels led me to have a disc removed in my back 20 years ago and then 9 weeks ago a new hip at the age of 57 yrs.

I feel really great 9 weeks on so don't want to do anything to upset the new hip! Good luck Littleone with your op in May. Everyone said to me don't worry and I have done all the exercises which is an absolute must! I feel the best I have in a long time. Enjoy the rest as well.

I would also suggest a visit to a foot doctor (podiatris). Often when they replace the hip, the leg may be a couple mm longer or shorter than before. Your lumbar spine, knee and opposite hip have to adjust to this discrepancy. Usually this is not a problem, but sometimes can be. Your body has been changed after many, many years of the same. My mother needed orthotics and they really helped. She said they made her feel more steady and stronger in general, but then you have to wear them all the time (even in her slippers). Just a thought.

Hi Jane. That sounds like a good idea. My surgeon discovered I had one leg slightly longer than the other prior to my op and has now made them both the same length. I am not sure how he has done this but now my jeans don't look different lengths now.

I have had trouble with the knee on the same side, due my GP thinks to the wrenching round it got while my hip was dislocated. Of course my quads are altered too. I rooted out a pair of Sketchers which used to, as I thought make my back hurt. They are very springy but have been a godsend as they cushion my knee. I have custom made insoles, but they no longer seem to suit me. Once the swelling resolves, I shall lash out on some new quality shoes and yes that will include some small heels! If I have any problems I shall get a referral to podiatry from my GP.
