After many years of attending my doctors with the same symptoms I was put on varying different tablets ranging from 30mg up to 90mg per day. This went on for approx 5 years with no further investigations. Each time I went to the doctor with the same recurring symptoms I was fobbed off. Finally after becoming seriously ill I had further investigation and was diagnosed with gall bladder disease and acid reflux with hiatus hernia - my gall bladder was removed last year and I am due for surgery tomorrow to repair the HH and sphincter muscle. Fingers crossed that this will finally solve my problems!

Just read your message, can i ask what symptoms you had, i have been fighting my dr for about 3 years to get something done, i was getting terrible pain just below right side of rib, I have had 2 scans for gallstones and nothing was found, was then told it may be diseased gallbladder, i have finally got an appointment in 2 weeks time to have camera down throat,, (cant wait for that one)... but someone has said it may be HH i have, just gettin bit fed up now as there are hardly any foods i can eat without getting heartburn and acid reflux, im not sleeping and more recently i have been getting really bloated and swollen tummy after i eat anything (even a small snack) and with the swelling get terrible wind (sounds horrible but the amount of wind is just not natural)!! and this bloated feeling can last all day. can you tell me did you get any of this, as im at the end of my tether now and fed up of feelin unwell. Was surgery successful? I have just been dianosed today with Hiatus Hernia 34-38cm!!! + Barratt's Oesophagus +IBS. Have you any suggestions that would help as I am pretty scared to say the least. My consultant is going to talk to me next week so any comments I would be grateful for.

I have suffered for many years with tummy problems and have been fobbed off for years with tabs that dont work or tests that have supposedly came back normal,a few weeks back I went for a manotery test that showed up a defective sphincter valve.I have since had a barium meal test to which I am hoping that it will confound my fears and show that I have a hiatus hernia when I get my results. On my last visit to the hospital I saw a different doctor who explained to me that there was no operation for a faulty sphincter valve and sent me for all these repeated tests.Any information on this operation would be great.I think personally I need an operation to stop the suffering of the heartburn and stomach problems.

    Hiya.

I am only 21 & have been diagnosed with hiatus hernia.

i vomit most of my food up everyday, i burp constantly, my stomach is always bloated. It doesn't matter what i seem to eat.. i still burp loads, i can feel it all in my oesophagus tube.. its really uncomfortable.

This has been going on for a year, I waited around for months and months.. trying to cure the belching myself, until it got worse over the last few months. so i went to the doctors and i got my endoscopy today!!!

I asked about surgery, i can't cope with this any more, its ruining my life, they said that \" a young healthy girl like me does not need surgery\" what's so healthy about vomiting food everyday? the idiots!

I'm going to fight to get surgery, i'm defiantly not giving up, I'm not living with this for the rest of my life.. NO WAY!!! A year is long enough for me, I f the doctors are not going to help me, i will happily get myself in debt to pay for my operation.

hi, i know you wrote on this ages ago but i wondered if you ever did get the surgery. im 24, and i've had a hiatus hernia for over 3 years. i've had awful symptoms. they were worse when i first got the hernia. but have never gone away. the medication i'm on now is making it a bit better. but still get bad days. my doctor is now sending me back to the surgeon she is concerened because i've lost so much weight i've gone from 12 and a hlf stone down 2 8 and hlf stone with out even trying. theres so much food i cant eat that im not getting a very good diet and have to take iron tablets to. i had to go to a surgeon about a year ago and he said there was no way he would operate. i've had 2 endoscopys and an ultra sound. what i would like to know is. was the surgery successful and safe? im very nervous and of course its making my stomach worse. please any advice would be great. x

    Hi Kat,

I had Nissan Op November 2008 and its solved nothing, i'm getting acid on a regular basis a week after op was back on medication & gaviscon. My diet is worse now than before the op - i'm wishing I hadnt had it done. I know it does work for some people but I was told with my results from Ph tests etc I was a ideal candidate for op to work! I'm now going through more tests Barium swallow another Ph test - great!

Just be careful if you are thinking about having the operation - I honestly wish I could turn back the clock.

Let me know how you get on

Hi Just reading everyones comments and thought I would add my own experiences.

I had terrible heartburn and reflux for 5 months and eventually went to the dr. He first checked my Helicobacter levels - which is a bacteria in the stomach that causes all these systoms.

My levels were extremely high so he put me on a 10 day - 3 medicines a day - course of treatment. This got rid of the Helicobater - yipee.

But the acid never went away. So off to another dr and the scope down the throat - lovely. Good news they found a Hiatus Hernia and they would operate the next week to sort the problem.

The operation went well - on a liquid diet for a week, then mushed up food for another. It took another 6 weeks to be able to eat everything I used to without choking or feeling like I was choking.

Unfortunately the heartburn came back - so I took Nexium and Zantac - and after a few days it went away.

Unfortunately - 4 weeks later the heartburn is back - so I am back on the Nexium and Zantac and with fingers crossed we carry on.

The moral of the story is that you find the problems one by one and try and sort them out. It is not as bad as it was and getting rid of the Helicobacter is good news as this causes alot of problems in the long run.

So get your levels checked - it is easy - only a blood test - then a stool sample at end to check it has all gone.

    Good luck everyone.
