After Pilonidal Abscess Drainage Operation?

Hi
I am new here so please be gentle with me 😊
I had been suffering with lower back ache for around a year or so and occasional tailbone pain. I had injured my coccyx around 6 years ago in a fall and put it down to this.
Two weeks ago a back ache flair up lead to severe tailbone / coccyx pain to the extent that I could barely sit down. On Sunday, the pain was horrendous, I felt genuinely unwell and I noticed a swelling at the base of my spine at the top of my bottom crack which seemed to go inot both buttocks. I went to A & E after much nagging by my husband and after seeing a surgical doctor was booked in as an emergency case on Monday morning for an operation to cut and drain a pilonidal abscess.
The operation went well and I was advised I would need to go to my local surgery every day this week to have the wound re-dressed which I have done. Things have been going well and the nurse said my wound was healing well. Then today I starting to feel rubbish again. Have aching in my left buttock, feel generally unwell like I am getting a bug or something. Thr nurse said that there was a bit of weeping still from the wound and it was a little bit inflamed but said she wasn't concerned about it. I saw my GP and she also said it looked fine and she didn't believe I needed antibiotics. My temperature and blood pressure were both fine.
Basically I just wondered if anyone else went from great relief after the drainage operation, to feeling unwell again in a few days. This whole diagnosis was a shock to me as a 45 year old pretty much hairless female so would never have thought I was a candidate for this from the stereotypical description online.
My main worry is that I going on holiday in just over a week and really want to be feeling better and not to have to worry about infection or the wound getting worse.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Thank you so much for your reply 😊
I'm glad to hear there doesn't appear to be too much to worry about. This is all so new to me and I find it worrying to read how many ops people end up having, so am guessing this isn't going to go away?

Did you have antibiotics after the surgery?
My surgery, although under general anaethseptic, was quite minor and I apparently only have a very tiny hole there. The wound is not big enough to be packed, so the nurse is just putting saline over it, some wound gel and then a dressing.
I keep getting conflicting reports on whether I will be able to go swimming by the time I go on holiday on 28th April? One GP said yes in sea but not in pool, another GP said no not at all and a nurse said yeah should be fine in sea and pool! So confused so am very grateful for any advice going 😊 thank you.

Thanks so much for all your replies. I only had the drainage surgery the Monday just gone. It was great for a couple of days (the pain prior to the op was horrible). It still feels much better than before the op, just not as good as the last few days. I accept that it would be best not to go swimming which is a shame, but I don't want to risk getting it infected. I asked my GP about antibiotics and she said I didn't need them as it wasn't infected.
I'm just hoping it doesn't ruin my holiday as we have been saving 3 years for it and we will be celebrating our 8th wedding anniversary! It's a 9 hour flight too which worries me if the pain gets really bad (tho will be ok if it stays how it is now).
I guess I just keep hearing and reading conflicting reports about the drainage and recovery. Like I said, the hole is tiny and not even big enough to be packed so can only be covered with flaminal gel and dressed, which I assume means I got off quite lightly compared to some of you poor people.

I can't tell you how carefull you must be with these as after my Outpatient appointment yesterday I have been told that this could go on for the rest of my life. I hope that doesn't happen as I have had this since 2007 and I am not sure how much more my body can take, especially after the way some of the larger procedures.
Good luck though and don't loose faith.

months into a 12 month backpacking trip. He underwent surgery number 3 yesterday. The surgeon has deroofed and debrided his previous large excision partially healed wound undertaken 5 months ago.
Am wondering if there is any recent evidence in the recurrence of pilonidal sinuses from the post op wound dressings used e.g Aquacell, Durafibre?
Would be great to have any advice or comments from Colorectal Consultants or Tissue Viability Specialist Nurses.
