After Surgery

Hi there,

I am posting on behalf of my husband as he is not well enough to sit and type.

He has surgery on Oct 26th for Chiari type 1. The first week after surgery he did really well but week 2 was terrbile. He was suffering an increase of headaches, increase of nauseous and just not able to move around well. Since Friday of last week he has been sleeping ALLOT, for the most part he is only up 4 - 5 hours a day other then that he is in bed sleeping.

Is this normally for this recovery and how long before they start to feel better.

He states he feels like he has a concussion as everytime he moves he gets an increase of pain in the head but if he stays still in a quiet room he is fine with no pain.

    Hi mandy85433,

I know exactly what your husband is going

through. He just needs to take it easy and

recuperate, it's not an simple surgery. He needs a

dark and quite room and let him sleep. After he

recuperates from surgery, then there might be

some other symptoms, in which doctors forget to

    inform patients.

It' been 6 yes for me, and still trying to adjust. But

at least I'm not in such pain as before the

    decompression.

Just as a reminder the decompression is not a

cure for chiari, it's just to relieve the pressure in the

head. But everyone is different in recuperating.

    Wishing him a fast recovery.

    Hope

Hi hope you have actually put my mind at rest as I still have some symptoms but as you say not as bad as before operation. I'm wandering if you have any tightness and tingling round your head where wound was. I'm still numb and have feeling as if something crawling, consultant says will ease off, but still there.

Hi Helen, I had strange feelings around the site of my wound about 6 weeks after surgery.,I was told it was the nerve endings/fibres re-growing and it would eventually pass, which it did. Sometimes it was like electric shocks and very tight feeling as well. I did have a small fluid leak under the skin (normal with no duraplasty) which made it feel tight, this corrected itself as well. Hope your recovery goes well. Take care.

Thank you hayley, I still have all that now and it's over a yr now. I have had x ray on my head before an mri scan for something else, but it was to make sure no iinflammation, and it was clear. Consultant said may last for long time, as major nerves are next to where they cut. May be as I'm60yrs old it takes longer to recover. Joys of getting older lol

      Hi Helen,

I had my surgery when I was 54 that was 6 yrs ago. It took almost 2yrs for the tightness, tingling and numbness tp go away. About 7 months ago, I start getting like a muscle spasm by the cut and goes up to my head. I was given muscle relaxers.

Do u have vomiting, short memory loss, problems with vision, and balance? Have u started therapy and rehab.? After surgery I was felling good for one week then I just went down hill. All my muscles in my body hurt

      Hi b2,

I know I did the right thing by having the decompression. Before it, I was having blackouts every time I would turn to the right and bend over. These blackouts would last for a few second, but the recovery of of these blackouts was worst. Sometimes to recover was 3 days. I would get headaches when I would laugh, was losing my balance that I had to hold on to the walls.

After the op, some well recover faster and feel nothing, but some well develop other symptoms due to op because the body, brian and nerves need to be retained. It takes time and patience. Every day, I am able to do a little more. Just don't lose hope.

      Have u had op?

      Dear Hope,

I have not have surgery yet, I am going to zee my second opinion NS on the 14 of Jan, i just collating all the people who are suffering and suffered and had op from then and talking the NS i will then decided what I am going to do..its look like the OP is the only option as our condition is more as mechanical issue not disease..so its just prepared me what to expect..I will keep you update..what would I need to ask my NS when I see him on the 14 of Jan?..any advise?

      Hi b2,

Make sure that the NS has experience in chiari just because he is a NS doesn't mean

he can perform the decompression satisfactory. Ask him how many decompressions he has done. Ask him that if you have any additional symptoms is he or the neurologists or your primary doc is going treat you.

There really no meds or treatments for chiari. But if you decide to have surgery, you well be making the right decision because the symptoms well get worse. Can you tell me what are you experiencing right now?

      Hope

I was lucky this NS apparently the best one in the UK, he is going to have a talk with me first to exactly advice me the risk/benefit etc..then up to me to decide, which I really have enough of the pain now, these are my symptom:

1 tingling all over my left and right hands

      2 inbalance

3 unbelieveable painful when coughing, sneezing, moving from sit to stand,

4 sometime a problem with swallowing

      5 headache at the occipital

6 unable to control my bladder (keep urine frequently)

7 aching on my back, neck, left arm

8 my memory also being effected

the drugs given are no longer effective

Hence i have enough as sudden movement will give me dizziness for a few second but very painful I have no quality life, I am unable to clean the house or back to my job etc.. so I really like to go back to work again or at least being normal

Hi Shaun, How are you doing now, have you seen your specialist and let them know how are you feeling/, it must be terrible feeling that way, is it better though after the OP? with CM it is mechanical error its not disease, is not something else? what about having pain management?
