After surgery for big toe fusion .

hi everyone ,i am new to toe and foot problems on this forum but have participated in discussions for other categories and found everyone so helpful.

i am currently on day five of recovery from big toe fusion. i was in severe pain for first two days but now bearable with non opiate medication. i can get up and walk easily for toilet stops and sponge baths but not doing anything but sitting with foot raised and feeling helpless!

I get y stitches out in another week and a half.

has anyone been through this too? What was their progression to recovery like? CAN ANYONE give me a reasonable time frame for recovery?

I live in AUSTRALIA and been to the top surgeon in SYDNEY?

5 Months post op and I am almost there. No swelling or pain after 20k steps and the tendanitis has gone after the exercises and medication. The scar is fading and is not tender anymore.

If I was 40% prior the op, I would say I am now 75-80% fully functional which is a great relief as the recovery has been so slow. I am walking naturally and dont have to try and remember to use the big toe or adjust my gait anymore.

I am off to the Bavarian pre Alps for the weekend hiking and expect to be covering 10 miles (1500m elevation) per day without pain. I have an appointment 14th April to see my surgeon and I expect to get the green light to start couch to 5k running again. I have purchased some On Cloud running shoes in readiness and they feel great.

The upright toe joint and loss of movement is a small price to pay for the pain relief. I probably had no other options as the nurse said it was the worst joint she had seen (3 fractures and loose bone) and if I had not had the op I would be in real trouble now with the pain and mobility.

I hope you are all recovering well with no complications.

      Hi Jason

How is your toe recovery now?We had our operation back in October 2018. its been really successful ,except just recently felt some tingling in big toe and numbness in one of smaller toes? Really strange! Has your toe completely settled ?
