After TURP - did it solve/cure nocturia/frequency/urgency issues?

Posted , 9 users are following.

Had a PAE last year. Due to median lobe issue it didn't help much with my nocturia and frequency/urgency issues during the day. One option is TURP - plasma button or other. For those of you who have had this procedure did it cure/help the nocturia/frequency/urgency issues that are so common with BPH?. I have to get up to go to the bathroom at least 5-6 times per night. I haven't had a good night's sleep in years.

my real life experience is this: 3 weeks and 1 day post Rezum and still not even back to baseline. worse then before procedure. still waiting fur improvement. very frustrated.

      John,

Having read of the post procedure issues with REZUM here I am not thinking of doing this. It isn't available to me anyway (not locally or covered by my insurance). So, for now, it is not one of my options. Sorry to hear you are still having issues. Hope these issues resolve for you soon!

      Thanks,

      Tom

    Tom,

I'm sorry to hear your PAE hasn't worked. After 12 months, PAE results are pretty much equal to TURP. TURP has faster results but PAE catches up.

Where did you have your PAE done? How many procedures did your doctor perform prior to you?

In going forward, as Ken suggests, look at alternatives to TURP, and weigh the risk/benefit of each procedure.

    Wish you future health,

    Michael

      Michael,

My PAE was performed by Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, CA. Dr. Hastings does these for all of Kaiser in California. Head of the IR department. I thought he was great. Fully covered by my Kaiser insurance. Post op very easy, recovery fast. Unfortunately, I would estimate I only had a 20% improvement in my pre-op symptoms. All of the prostate procedures have side effects, some pain, recovery periods etc. There appears to be a general consensus here that the TURP, even using the latest plasma button head, is a last resort. So, I am back to not knowing what to do next. So, right now, I'll just try to "tough it out".

      Thanks for your advice,

      Tom

Hey Tom. Did your doctor tell you that maybe another PAE would help. Ken

      Ken,

Yes, he did. We discussed my lack of success and he said his team looked over the images and figured out what would work. Sounded very encouraging. He had just returned from a conference where PAE failures were discussed and he said my prostate configuration fit the pattern. Very encouraging discussion. So, maybe I am headed for a second PAE.

Yes that does sound good. When are you going to have the second one done. Let us know Ken

      Ken,

I was going to have the second PAE done in April, but I got food poisoning, or something similar, in March, and am still not quite myself. Don't want to do the PAE until I am 100% back. In Feb I got a UTI and took Cipro, and I may be suffering from a reaction to that antibiotic - it's called being "floxed". Can't be sure, but my central nervous system has been effected and my aerobic capacity is down about 15%. I seem to be recovering slowly. My doctor (not uro) can't figure out what's going on. My wife had something similar many years ago and it took her three years to recover. So, now I am very cautious about antibiotics. Actually, somebody on this forum warned me about the cipro, but it was too late - I was on my last tablet.

Sorry to hear that but you need to me 100% before you try it again. I don't have a problem with Cipro Just got done with it had to take it for 28 days. Some men do have a problem with Cipro. Just take care of your self Ken

      Ken,

In Feb I took the Cipro for 10 days, then on my last tablet I got dizzy. A forum member referred me to a letter that Bayer wrote to all doctors last year about Cipro and it was scary. I then researched everything I could about it on the net. The effects appear to be cumulative. I have taken it in the past and it never effected me before - but this time, I don't know. It was very effective - worked fast, but I will never take it again, just to be on the safe side.

A few days ago I felt I was coming down with another mild UTI - possibly bladder infection. So, I began to take thousands of mg of Vit C and the symptoms cleared. Apparently the C acidifies the urine and kills the bacteria. Glad this worked because I am now apprehensive about taking another antibiotic.

Hope you are doing better. 28 days is a very long time to be on the Cipro. Glad to hear nothing has happened to you.

Glad you found that out about Vitamin C. I will try that if I feel a infection coming on. Yes I have been taking Cipro for years have had no problem. I do ok with antibiotic pills or IV's. In 2014 had 7 bladder and kidney infection and sepsis. That year I was a mess. Glad all is going better for you Ken

      Ken,

Sound like 2014 was a year to forget for you. Glad you're doing better. The vitamin C seems to have absolutely cleared my bladder irritation/infection issue. Feel back to normal today. I am still afraid to take more Cipro after what I have read. If I need an antibiotic in the future will look at something else. The fact that you are OK with the Cipro is good since it's a very strong antibiotic and very effective for UTIs.

Thank you. Yes that was a year to forget. But I have learn things from that. Men have to learn how to do thing that they don't want to do. I was not the type of person to run to a doctor or a hospital. If it was me I tell everyone I'm fine. But if it was my kids they were at the hospital or doctor they could not say no. I let it go so bad that when I finely got to the hospital The doctor told be another week I could have died. The sepsis was in my blood and was hitting all my organ. He said that my kidney were shutting down. I was on 24 hour IV antibiotic in the hospital and I had a port put in to have the IV antibiotic for 11 days at home. Now I have learned to listen to my body and If I have had a problem I take myself to the hospital. A couple of years ago I had a problem with a-fib. In 2016 I was in the hospital 9 time. Heart rate went yup has high has 198. In November of 2016 had a 9 hour heart ablation . He burn the left side of my heart. Been good for over a year. This year Ihave had 4 attacks. It may be fails. I have a monitor on for a month and I have to go Tuesday for a stress test. I may have to go again for a ablation. I was told that it sometimes fails but we take the chance. But life goes on. I take one day at a time and deal with it. That is all we can do. Life goes on Take care Ken

    Tom,

My reply is held up by the mods.

I tried to provide a link. Google PAE vs. TURP and look for an analysis of each over a period of up to 2 years (it compares IPSS, void rate, PVR, etc. post surgery).

    It's informative.

    Wish you the best,

    Michael

    Michael,

Yes, have done the comparative research previously. That's why I went for the PAE last year. Procedure was fully covered by my insurance, went well, little post operative discomfort. However, didn't do much to help me. Urine flow still restricted, have to run to the bathroom every hour to hour and a half, day and night. Can never fully empty my bladder. PVR shows 170ml still in the bladder after voiding, so it's always 1/3 full. Yes, TURP does have side effects. PAE little or no side effects and it works for most men, just not for me, unfortunately. When I had it done last year I was really hoping for a positive result. I may go in for a second PAE, but I know a TURP can get results fairly fast. I have this dream that before bed I will be able to empty my bladder, then sleep for at least several hours before having to get out of bed again.

    Thanks, Tom
