Airport Scanners

I hope to be flying out from the UK soon and I'm curious to know what the procedure is when my metal knee sets off the detector.

Is it just a case of an X-Ray or do you need something like a medical certificate.

What happens when you come back from a third world country that doesn't possess an X-Ray machine, do you have to strip off and have your knee examined?

Hi David we've had this discussion before and we came to the conclusion that they will just do a body search just like anybody else that sets off the detector. A medical certificate is pretty useless due to the fact a terrorist could get hold of one so security will just ignore it. When it sets the detector off just tell them you've had a TKR and they'll have a good feel around that area x

I had to be in a US courthouse and although I told them that the beeper would go off, I still needed to walk through the scanner. Then they wanded me down and off I went.  My sister in law had a similar situation from from US to Italy with a hip replacement. This seems to be a situation that they are well aware of and handle with a bit of dignity. Take an aisle seat so you can stretch the leg (and trip obnoxious passengers).

    Safe journey.

    Hi David

I have had a Right TKR go through airports most weeks travel for work.

If the airport does not have body scanners , they use the hand held devices. The metal in your knee makes a slightly different noise with the hand held devices , so never any need for a strip search.

    Good healing
