Akin and Lapidus Fusion Bunion Surgery

Posted , 6 users are following.

I'm 19 days post surgery after having Lapidus fusion and Akin procedure. Dressings are all off and surgeon has advised to start exercising and massaging the joint and incision area. I'm finding that whenever i touch my foot or don't elevate, my foot turns purple, hard and very swollen. My other toes are very stiff as well and can hardly move them at all. Has anyone else experienced this? Don't want to bother my surgeon to ask these questions if they are normal at this stage!

You are very very very early in your journey to recovery. I had a simpler bunion surgery plus hammertoe repair and I was nit allowed any weight bearing, practically no movement for 6 weeks. My surgery was on Oct 31 and my foot still swells considerably if I am o my feet for an hour or more. Swelling is expected for quite a long time and even later in the game, up to a year. And yes, the foot being purple, stiff, all is par for the course. I am walking now but not perfectly and I am still basically home bound. I have not driven yet. Yesterday I started physical therapy and I have to do some prescribed toe exercises twice a day. I still cannot wear the majority of my shoes. Only wide, large, velcro-closing soft shoes are accepted by my foot. So yes, what you are experiencing is very normal so early in your recovery. This is a long process!

I had my op on 31st July & I am pleased to say that things are now beginning to settle very nicely although my second toe that was fused is still feeling numb. However I do believe it was worth it as I can now put on my winter boots allbeit not for too long!!

I agree with the comments above that what you are experiencing is par for the course. Just remember to keep your foot elevated as much as possible. 19 days is not a long time in this process. i was told it could take at least 6 months & maybe even be as long as a year until the foot settled down. However if you are still in the least bit worried speak to your consultant. All the best.

I had Lapidus bunionectomy with my second toe having mallet surgery. My surgery was on December 19th, 2019. My surgeon has me in a non weight bearing cast for 6 to 8 weeks. After that PT and wearing a boot for 6 weeks. I was told that for the duration of wearing the cast, to have my foot elevated and iced unless it is necessary to be up and around. 2 hours of driving and shopping for some groceries sent me home with a very uncomfortable swollen foot. (and no, I am not driving yet...).I have heard this is expected for quite a long time. Your foot looks so much better than mine if I may say so! I only saw mine 11 days post surgery then it was put in a cast. I wish you well.
